Hi, all hope that this is in the correct section.

I am at the planning stage of a European trip.

I live in cheshire and want to go to italy then visit the ferrari factory and Lamborghini factory, before taking in some of the passes in the alps then off to stuttgart for the porsche factory then a visit to the Nuremberg ring.

I know its a basic layout at the moment, but I want to know of the best way to get to italy?

I ask this as I'll be doing this in a westfield and don't want to drive all the way from cheshire to italy if possible.

is there a possibility of ferry to netherlands then a freight train to italy?

just weighing up options at the moment.

thanks for any help, Steve.

Me and my wife did a euro trip in my vx220 in may this year. It's an awesome holiday, were hoping to do similar in my caterham next year.

You have to expect a bit of driving to get through France as its a very big country. You have to stop off at Reims it's a must do for a petrolhead. We stopped off at a fair few places place including Monaco. Bologna Italy, Italian lakes and alps, Swiss alps, Zurich and Luxembourg. All in all a brilliant holiday just expect a couple of days with long stints behind the wheel. It all depends how long you are going for, we went for 10 days and used some motorways to get through France and Italy. When we do it in the caterham I'm going to go for 2 weeks and keep off motorways.

Reims is brilliant, a lot of history and the town is a nice place to sit and eat.

Monaco

The Swiss alps (awesome roads)

thanks for your quick reply, that trip looks awesome. really impressive.

Ideally would like to spend 10-14 days but if I could fast track to the south of france/italy this would allow for more time to travel/tour

just looking at the eurostar, and they offer a trip from london to marseille this would be great for me.

I'm struggling to get any info from there website. does this service just take people? or does it take vehicles?

i've never used the train before all ways used ferries before, and don't know wether the car transporter just crosses the channel?

Make sure you do the St Gotthard, Furka and Grimsel passes on your way up north. Infinitely better than the Stelvio. Your options are virtually unlimited but allow plenty of time on the passes, you cover the milrs really slowly. But they're awesome fun :-)

Eurostar does not carry cars.

There is a car carrying train that will take you part of the journey but i cannot

remember where it starts and ends.I read it on here so hopefully someone more in the know

will see your thread.

I'm pretty sure you can take a vehicle train from Holland to Italy (or an equivalent) which might be more civilised than driving the Westfield all that distance.

I'm sure you've plenty of motivation already but just in case you don't...this is Switzerland. A short scuffle emerged shortly after this short over who was driving the next leg of the trip.

If you follow the link below you will see that they are running a tour (already fully booked), but you will see from their itinary that they offer a moto-rail type option on this tour. Should give you a start at least.

thanks for the replies, I found "http://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm#.UMfFjHwgGSM" to be very useful, this "www.autoslaaptrein.nl" this site can be translated in to english.

so next up is to have a look at this site and see if its feasible to use this method or better to just drive.

to be honest Ade, the more the merrier. at current there is no plans just a mere outline of an idea. I think this might be penciled in for 2014 though.

wedding next year and we want to do a few trips around the UK first. only just purchased the westfield, so I want to get to know the car mechanically, I know it'll be fine, but it's a long trip to do in a car I haven't done some previous miles in.

Roastie, thanks for your post. I read this a few days ago and have been struggling to find it since. It's this post that's made me start looking properly.

I've fancied it for a long time but never looked in to it.

Ade, I'll post when I have something set out, I've gotta speak to a few friends first and make a plan.
