HI Guys,

Can anyone tell me which way I should travel to Italy from west Sussex as me and other half are planning on doing a 8 night driving holiday and I don't know which way should go for some nice driving roads and views.

Was going to catch euro tunnel to France and then .........

Are plan is to stop on route in places for a night or two.

We are aiming to end up at lamborghini and to do a tour of the production line and then to head back home.

Was thinking of visiting lake como also so if anyone has ideas of where to stay that would be most helpful.

Thanks

Jase

Have a look at this thread which includes links to write ups of other peoples Euro road trips, should hopefully give you a few good ideas.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/forum.asp?h=0...

Below is the route that I took back from Maranello in Italy, so will obviously need to be reversed and amended to include Como:

Maranello to Lake Garda where we stopped for a couple of days, me & the wife really loved it there.
After Garda, we headed to Davos, this was via the infamous Stelvio Pass.
Then it was from Davos to Andermatt via the San Bernadino Pass, we also did the Furka & Grimsel passes the same day.
Then it was Andermatt to Baden Baden in Germany. We stopped off at Lucerne which is a lovely town, then we drove through the Black Forrest, the route we took was Wehr to Todmoos to Todtnau to Oppenau to Ruhestein and finally to Baden Baden.
From Baden to Baden we drove to the Nurburgring.
The final day was Nurburgring to home.

Hope that helps.

I'll try to remember to post some detail when I get to my computer.

We did a road trip from UK to Belgium (Grand Prix) Germany, Austria, Italy (Grand Prix) Switzerland and France to home. One place I can really recommend was Magic Lake Camping on Lake Como. It was fantastic and great for cycling and kayaking. Excellent facilities, hotel style breakfast served and takeaway pizzas are really cheap! I loved it there. Also C-Hotel near Monza was excellent.

We did Grimselpass on the way home in Switzerland. Amazing road and much better than Stelvio. Also stayed in Mulhouse in France as well as a fantastic hotel called Chateau de Rilly near Champagne in a wonderful vineyard.

Believe it or not, we didn't plan a route home after the Italian GP, nor any accommodation. We stopped of at McDonalds every afternoon to use their free wifi and booked using the Hotels.com app on the ipad!

I have our route on Google Maps somewhere, I'll find it or you.

Starting in West Sussex the undoubtable best Channel crossing is from Portsmouth to Le Havre, there's a ferry sailing at 22:00 ish that gets your wheels onto the right hand side of the road at 06:00 the next morning. The cost of this crossing is very reasonable, a cabin doesn't cost much so you can sleep and begin your holiday refreshed and early. Of course if you want to begin your super trip with a drive to Dover then the interminable drag across northern France...

We're planning the same for the summer and the suggestions for routes in the links above pretty much cover it.

If you end up in Garda I can recommend this hotel ( http://www.regina-adelaide.it/en/benvenuto.en.htm ). Really lovely family run hotel, 30 seconds from the lake and the old town, the bonus is it has secure parking!!

I do Italy several times each year.
On way down-
Not done it yet but I believe some of the main Le mans Circuit is drivable, ie Mulsanne straight.
Got to do a lap of Monaco and a day there.
Coast road to Genoa from Monaco is nice.
Can be fun at night at speed especially around Genoa.
Maybe a quick one down to Portofino.
I always stay around La Spezzia area. I tend to just pull off and follow the sat nav to a BnB in a village near the autostrada, then try a restaurant.Never been dissapointed.

On the way back, Como out of season, there a few very reasonable priced hotels in Cernobio, right next to where they hold the Concourse at Villa D'Est.
well worth a drive along the lake there as well and perhaps take the hydrofoil along the lake to another town for lunch or coffee.
Switzerland is a must, Going up n over St Gottardo pass rather than the tunnel is nice.

Im sure others have recomendations.

Ps Id visit Pisa on the way if your going to modena to the lambo factory and museum.

Good route but you shouuld have turned off in Biasca to the Lukemainer Pass. That in turn leads to the Oberalp pass which brings you back to Andermatt. I would have then headed south on the Gottard pass (the 'worst' in the area in terms of the view) and headed west on the Neufenen pass then continue north on the Grimsal. The Furka is lovely when driving the first half west to east but the other side, although very pretty, is just too full of tourists and very narrow.

Pisas well worth a visit for a morning but only if you like that sort of thing, some really good restaurants out of the main area....Its about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs from Modena assuming theyve stopped digging up the E35 at Firenza, which when youve gone that far, isnt exactly a long way.

St Gotthards Pass into Northern Italy is very good (if its open, has snow on it until late May).

I've only stayed at one place on Lake Como which is this place:

http://www.motelnautilus.it/eng/index.htm

I absolutely loved it. The place is not in its hey-day but the attraction is that its RIGHT over the lake, you can tell it was absolutely swinging when it was first built, the owner (when I went) stores and collects gorgeous Riva Speed boats (used to be an F1 power boat world champion or something), it has plenty of parking and it was cheap.

Check it out.

If you do go to Monaco, the coast road around to Genoa is rather good
