Discussion
Hi - I was after some advice. Going to the 'ring in August for a track day session.
There are a few of us driving over from Calais - does anybody know a decent route? We'd like something that's fun but also won't take too long. Also, any ideas of where to stop for a spot of decent lunch?
Any views gratefully received.
Cheers

Me and my mates normally follow the coast up to Dunkirk, then cross into Belgium, from there, drive East until you reach Germany, the roads are fantastic, however the drivers in Belgium must have got there licenses from the backs of cereal boxes, they are truly the worst drivers I have ever encountered...

Yes I've heard that they're not great drivers. Oh well. Thanks for the information. The 2 best routes IMO both start by following the E40 from Calais, around the Brussels ring road, and down to Liege.
Route 1 would be to stay on the E40 into Germany, heading past Aachen and taking you onto some sections of autobahn. Head south at Kerpen onto the A61, and then onto the A1 until it ends, left onto the L115, left at the cross-roads onto the A258 and follow until you hit the ring.

Route 2 would be to come off the E40 at Verviers, heading south on the E42, taking you past Spa Francorchamps, until Prum. There is a couple of different routes from here as it's all rural, but the roads are great fun

Route 1 is a little longer (about 15 miles), but both are similar time.
If you want to stop somewhere nice for lunch it depends what time you land, but i like to drop into Bruges which is right off the E40 and an hour north of Calais.

Sonic - I'm assuming by "some sections of Autobahn" you mean "some unrestricted sections of Autobahn". I'm not that bothered about motorway driving.Route 1 would be to stay on the E40 into Germany, heading past Aachen and taking you onto some sections of autobahn. Second route was the one we took on a recent trip down to Adenau. Spa was a decent stop for some lunch and we also had a quick drive out to the circuit to have a wander around/watch the track day.
Apart from some horrendous traffic round Brussels it worked well. I think the key thing is to get through France/Belgium asap - roads aren't much fun and the driving is shocking!
