Emerald Hoon with Dettaglio

Another fantastic driving tour with PH and Dettaglio

After the success of the Tartan Hoon we're pleased to be able to offer you some more fantastic driving tours with our partner Dettaglio. Starting with the awesome Emerald Hoon below, it promises to be yet another great tour with Dettaglio:

This tour takes in the Circuit of Ireland Rally route, the third oldest road rally in the world. The rally inspired generations of local drivers and feted talents such as Roger Clark, who won the 1970 rally in an Escort RS1600.

Our route starts in Rosslare and takes in the city of Waterford before heading along the south coast past Cork. We then follow the west coast up past Galway, Donegal and Sligo and the Giant's Causeway before heading south to Dublin for our final night. Highlights include Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, Cliffs of Moher, the West Coast of Ireland and the Northern Irish 'Atlantic Drive' as well as a range of superb hotels handpicked to offer members a memorable and enjoyable trip on PistonHeads' first ever tour to Ireland.

The tour runs from Saturday 24 May to Friday 30 May 2014 (inclusive).

Our first night is at the Athenaeum House Hotel overlooking the River Suir estuary. In the evening, members will eat dinner together in the hotel or have the option of wandering into nearby Waterford to find something to eat and drink.

On the second day we will depart from Waterford, making our way west towards Cork before heading out to the spectacular west coast. Passing Kinsale and Clonakilty we then head up towards Bantry and into Kerry. Our destination is the wonderful Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa on the edge of Killarney and overlooking Killarney Lakes.

On day three we will make our way from Killarney around the Ring of Kerry - a fabulous drive of 110 miles that encapsulates some of the most magnificent coastal scenery in Ireland. Our route then gives you the option of driving the Dingle Peninsula before heading north past Listowel for a short ferry crossing (from Tarbert to Killimer) into County Clare. Our stop is at the Lisloughrey Lodge Hotel just past Galway.

Day four will see us departing Galway, travelling north through the Connemara National Park along Ireland's west coast. Driving through the Ballycroy National Park, we then head to Ballina. Our destination is the wonderful four-star Ice House Hotel located just outside Ballina on the River Moy estuary.

On day five we will drive along the west coast of Ireland where it meets the Atlantic Ocean passing Sligo, Donegal and Dunfanaghy. Our route encompasses part of the Glenveagh National Park before passing Letterkenny into Northern Ireland.

The sixth day we will drive to the Giant's Causeway - we recommend you set aside a minimum of one to two hours for your visit to include the world-famous basalt columns and the Shepherd's Steps. Continuing up along the Northern Irish coast, our route incorporates the beautiful 'Atlantic Drive' which, on a clear day, offers a spectacular view of Scotland. From Larne, our route takes us directly to Dublin. Our destination is Croke Park Hotel - a fabulous four-star hotel located to the north of the city.

On the final day after breakfast, we depart the hotel at 12.00pm for our return ferry from Dun Laoghaire Port at 1 pm. Our expected arrival time into Holyhead Port is 5 pm.

What's included:

- Six nights bed and breakfast accommodation in a range of good quality hotels.

- Overnight parking charges (where applicable).

- Printed route book including a full itinerary, overview driving directions and places to visit.

- Complimentary use of a satellite navigation machine pre-loaded with all routes, hotels and points of interest.

- Professional guide.

- The presence of a qualified mechanic.

- Support vehicle for transporting luggage and spare parts (limited availability).

- Access to the Spa facilities provided at each hotel (where applicable).

- VAT and all local taxes.

Prices

£995 per person based on 2 people sharing a twin or double room in one car

Single supplement of £800 assuming 1 person in a double room in one car.

We're sure that you will agree that this represents amazing value for money for what will be a great week of driving around Ireland and staying in some lovely hotels with like minded PH'ers.

This looks amazing, I am Irish living in Ireland and have driven most if not all of these roads and they are awesome. I'd love to take a week off and do this myself, but I don't have a car worthy of it at the moment.

Just one word of warning though, some of the roads here are very poorly surfaced so expect mid corner bumps etc..., would hate to read here that someone damaged a nice supercar when I had the chance to warn them. Caution until you get used to it lads and enjoy smile

As patmahe has already said Irish minor roads aren't in brilliant condition so keep that in mind when you are picking a car to use. The roads are narrow rally roads rather than race tracks, think Impreza turbo rather than Lamborghini.

Just as a point of accuracy:
"Continuing up along the Northern Irish coast, our route incorporates the beautiful 'Atlantic Drive' which, on a clear day, offers a spectacular view of Scotland."

Atlantic drive is in Co. Donegal with views of nothing but sea, next stop America. I think the road you are probably talking about is Torr Head, which is one of the best rally stages in the whole country.

Just beat me to it there. Torr Head and the North coast road will be the best part of the trip.

The North Coast road really is a belter though it's better on the way up than down driving

Pity this doesn't incorporate a trip through the Mournes. Roads are epic

Must keep an eye out.

Christ, these seem to have gone up a fair bit with the new supplier, £1800 for 6 days in Ireland is a touch stiff.

What happened to the Petrolhead Nirvana tours?

Perhaps someone can enlighten me but the main picture reminded me of the Sugarloaf in county Wicklow.

I did leave county Wicklow in 1985 so it could be memory playing tricks.

Still going on their own but not the PH partner for tours anymore - there was an announcement a while back.

It's definitely not the Sugarloaf. Same shape, but different surrounding landscape. The road you think you're looking at is the road to Roundwood - which is a much more lush and green area.

Just found this in the previous thread.

Not disputing that they're probably good and well organised, which of course is a lot of work, however, £1800 each or £2000 for two people is sodding pricey

The drive through Connemara, down the Delphi Valley and from Louisburgh to Leenane. Absolutely stunning. Here's what you can look forward to.

When I saw this pop up I thought this would make a great birthday present to myself with my wife, I’ve never been to Ireland and what a great way to experience it driving some nice roads.

That was until I saw the price… my jaw nearly hit the keyboard! According the article above for me and the wife it would cost £1990 plus ferry crossings from Holyhead (a £354 return trip), and obviously plus lunch, dinner and petrol.

With the article as inspiration I thought I’d check to see how much it would cost to book the hotels on booking.com, and to be honest I’m a bit shocked… all these prices include breakfast. The Lisloughrey is fully booked but it still gives you the price.

1st Night: 24/05 Athenaeum House Hotel £83.00
2nd Night: 25/05 Aghadoe Heights Hotel £158.00
3rd Night: 26/05 Lisloughrey Lodge Hotel £133.14 fully booked
4th Night: 27/05 Ice House Hotel £71.00
5th Night: 28/05 No hotel listed £???.??
6th Night: 29/05 Croke Park Hotel £105.00
TOTAL B&B COST £550.14
(plus the unknown hotel ~£100? So a total of £650.14

Correct me if I am wrong but are they seriously charging £1340 for…
Overnight parking charges.
Printed out driving directions.
A satnav with the itn file loaded on it.
And a ‘professional’ guide with a mechanic in a car that can take your bags if need be.

Is it April 1st already?

(obviously them prices on booking.com are going to go up, but they were correct at the time this article was released).

HOW MUCH?!

£1,800?!

I'm taking my family to Lake Como in the middle of summer for less than that! Including return flights to Munich, hiring a 5-series BMW estate for the week, 3-bed apartment with pool and a week of food!

I love Ireland, but not for £300 per day plus expenses and getting there! rofl

Maybe they meant $1800 and the '£' is a typo?

One of my regular haunts too cloud9 my wife is from that neck of the woods. I'll never forget the day I discovered that stretch of road, I crested the hill just before that and that view was in front of me, my jaw nearly hit the floor, awesome place, keep an eye out for tourists and sheep smile

Seems very expensive to me, especially considering ferries aren't included.

£1800 for one person or £1990 for two? I realise there has to be a profit out these trips, but really?

Rochester's post sums it up quite neatly.

Guys,

These tours are very popular so value is obviously seen in them. If you don't see the value then don't go, please don't post on the thread complaining. As I said, if you think it's expensive, don't go.

Thank you

My comment was more generally based. I don't think PH has the slightest clue who its customer is.
