A group of us are going to the Nurburgring in a few weeks time but on our first full day it is evening sessions only so we have a whole day to spare.

Is there anything good in the area worth doing? This will be our 6th trip we have made so we know all the basic stuff like all the restaurants and all that but we haven't been before where we have a spare day and no track time (until the evening) so just wondered if anyone has any good suggestions to kill the time.

Cant remember the name of it but there is an metal toboggan run on the valley road leading into/out of Adenau. We went there last year for exactly the same reason as you, bit of time to kill. If you want to be a big kid for a while its fun.

A bit of a trek-but-achievable drive to either of the Porsche/MB/BMW museums in Stuttgart?

Adenau is quite a nice place to walk around, worth a visit.

Plenty of stuff in the surrounding region.
The cities of Bonn, Koln or Koblenz are well worth a visit. Id recommend going by train to Bonn or Koln but Koblenz is easy by car.

Other options are to head south towards the Moselle river and to scenic towns of Cochem or even Tirer. Or to Boppard which in on the Rhine.
Numerous castles in the area too. Burg Eltz is near Cochem for example.

If you are young at heart then have a play around on a rodelbahn, good fun to be honest.
There is one north of the Nurburgring.

Or if you like a bit of wildlife then this is within a nice drive out for the day:

Or if you like your German beer, head down to the town of Bitburg where they brew Bitburger beer. All the local area pubs and restaurants have it for sale and for a rather better price than found most other places.

Just to add,
When we first started going to the Nring back in the early 2000's we did much like you. It was very much track focussed and nothing much else.
But when you venture away from the track you'll notice the area is very attractive, driving on the 'A' roads in the region is an absolute pleasure.

Take a drive down to Cochem. Lovely road leading there from the ring and a really nice town too.

As far as castle go, that is quite a stunning one. Visited on a 'ring trip a few years ago - they might have even removed most of the scaffolding now!
