For anyone just vaguely curious, the only thing that was wrong with the 550 was a clip connecting to a water pump just sprang loose!!!

However I did also pick up a few stone chips and a chipped windscreen!!! So the clip cost me sod all and the rest £145!!!

What news on the TVR?

Glad to hear your 550 was not serious - I thought the worst when I saw all that smoke and steam!

And of course the cracked windscreen happened on your way to Tecsos. Don't let them fob you off with some repair job - that's no more than a Cavalier with metal coat hanger for an aerial. Plus it devalues the car in the long term. NOT appropriate.

To replace the entire winscreen will undoubtedly cost a fortune (it's something like 2k for an Esprit) but you're only hit by a 50-100 quid excess which doesn't affect your NCB. Check the small print though, some insurers limit the maximum windscreen payout to a palty £500. Even so you could get a precision surgical repair for that.
