Well,

First, 'hi' to everyone here as this is my first post - I'm often on the Fiat Coupe Forum, but thought I'd have a look here too (also have my car for sale on here in the Fiat classifieds so its about time I introduced mysefl!).

Anyway,

After a tiny bit of discussion I'm now entering the Mongol Rally: www.mongolrally.com this summer as a graduation present to myself and hopefull to raise a load of money for charity in the process!!

Not far into the planning as yet but as time goes on I'll keep you all posted as to what's happening and will get my website up as soon as my brother has written it for me - probably this will be in mid February.

So,

If anyone has any useful ideas for fund raising / blagging or has any contacts or experience of this kind of thing I'd be more than greatful for any advice.

More importantly, in the spring I'll be trying to gain as much publicity / exposure for this as possible so hopefully some people here may be able to help with that too .

That's all for now,

Thanks for you time,

John.

John that rally is nuts - good luck to you, I'm sure you'll have a great time - do please post a write up when you return.

I have used justgiving.com for most of my fundraising and find it to be excellent. People from all over the world can donate online with a credit card which is really hassle free. You just need to ensure that the charity for which you are raising money is registered at the site. That way the money goes directly to the charity and you need not worry about collecting cheques etc.

Have a look at my site which might help you with ideas:

www.justgiving.com/ashok

All the best.

You're an absolute legend mate, I've been looking for something for after graduation that didn't involve looking for a job, and this is most definitely it. Having talked it over with parents and other responsible figures, am going to start looking for donations and sponsors, see how far I get and make a decision as to whether to come on the 06 rally at some point in the very near future.

Naturally, I think it sounds like the best thing since sliced bread.

Go for it !!

It's going to be the best thing ever and hopefully shouldn't cost too much if I get it right!!

Have a look on the website as there is a meeting on the 22nd Jan somewhere in Bow, East London for people looking to enter - I'll be popping over to have a proper look at what it's all about.

Did you get to the meeting in London?

I would love to take part myself, but am not sure I will be able to get the time off work. Have they set the dates yet? I had a look on the website and could'nt find any actual dates.

I couldn't make the meeting in the end due to having a load of work to get done.

There have been a few problems hanging-over from the importation exemptions on last years cars. This hasn't been helped by the recent and unexpected change of prime minister in Mongolia.

This has now all just about been sorted out and the entry for this years rally is expected to open at the end of this month as Tom, the organiser, didn’t want to get this year’s underway until the last one was fully tidied up.

The start date is still expect to be July 22nd and the rally, at a push, with no mishaps, can be completed in 3 weeks. This is a very big if!!

We are aiming for 3 weeks but are allowing more like 5 to be sure. Also, there are 3 suggested routes, the north, central and south. The quickest is the north so if pushed for time probably best to consider this one.

If there’s anything else just ask and I’ll try to answer,

John.

Eddie,

Many thanks - I'll take you up on that.

I'm going to be away from the internet for a couple of days but will be back in touch when I get back.

If you want to drop me a mail with a line or two about your company I'll add that to the sponsors section of our team website too.

I'll have more details when I'm back and our website should be finished soon too so will be ready to get on with seeking more sponsors and publicity then.

Thanks again,

John.

Hi again,

I've now got some info together and the website is almost complete so it's time to start the publicity drive!!

................................................................................................

As a few of you will know already, this summer myself and a friend are entering the Mongol Rally. This is an expedition starting in London which involves driving more than 8000 miles to the capital of Mongolia, Ulaan Baatar. The route is pretty much up to us; as is everything else.

There is no support team.

The car has to have an engine of 1 litre or less to add to the challenge and the main purpose is to raise as much money for charity as possible by doing the rally. This is not a holiday for us, though we will of course be enjoying ourselves along the way (at our own expense).

We are supporting Cancer Research UK and the rally’s charity, Mery Corps.

What we are looking for is support from as many people as possible. We need:

* Corporate Sponsorship (publicity is set to be huge this year)
* Personal Sponsorship
* Equipment

All we are asking is for people to take the time to consider and appreciate what we are doing. If you can make a donation or help otherwise please do so. Anything would be welcomed because small donations will soon add up and help us to raise more than the other teams.

I’m quite sure that no-one out there can honestly say that they can’t afford a couple of pounds for these charities and to save time everything can be done safely on-line within moments. I’m not going to beg but please take the time to have a look.

Even if you feel unable to help, you can. Please forward this to as many people as you can – send it around the office, to you friends, to other forums – anywhere to get this noticed!!!!

I’ll happily add your name / business to our site / car in return for sponsorship to get the resulting publicity that we will be generating nearer to the start date on [bb]July 22nd 2006.

I’ll post updates here as and when they happen.

Everything mentioned here is covered in more detail on our website www.london2mongolia.com

Thanks so much for your time,

John (and Paul).

.......and thanks to Eddie 4.2 for jumping straight in with his support - top man!!

Yeah!!!

We now have our entry confirmed and the 100 places have all sold out within a couple of hours so should be a great event this year.

Hello,

I am going to Mongolia in a Mini. What you taking? Sounds so good. I cant wait. Have you raised any money, I think that will be the hard part, raising a grand.

Hi Ian,

To be honest I think raising the money will be a lot easier than you might think.

We have hardly started to ask around and are looking good already. We’re fairly confident that we can get our hands on most of the kit we need and then just have to find someone to blag a car off!

We haven’t decided what to take yet as we hope to get it nearer the time as we expect the kind of car we are after will only have a short MoT so don’t want it to run out before the rally starts!! Ideally, we’d take a Mini but they’re looking a bit expensive to buy so will probably go with a Fiat Panda 4x4 as they seem to be up to the job.

It’s all getting a lot more exciting now we have actually paid the money and have a place – it all seems to be hitting home just what we are in-for!! In a good way!

How far on are you with the planning etc??

John.

Hi John

I know what you mean by getting exciting now we have paid. Well we have the cars. Just doing some work to them, having a few problems but we will get there. I know what you mean by paople showing an interest about sponsorship. We are going to arrange charity dinners, quiz nights etc. At the moment seems like we have loads to do, just got to get out teeth into it and get the ball rolling.

I was lucky with the Mini, managed to pick one up for £60 with 9 months MOT. Few dents here and there but its only done 40k miles, seems a shame we have to leave it in Mongolia but its all for charity and a cool road trip.

Whats your team name, we are called Mini Adventure A team, our fellow friends are the B team.

Ian,

That's just the kind of car we need - a mini with an MoT that's not going to cost a crazy amount (as most seem to!).

It is a bit sad though to think that they'll get sold-off in Mongolia but then it's all for a good casue.

We are the 'Adventure Capitalists' - about the 20th team down on the list.

John.
