Possible Pistonheads sailing event
Discussion
Hi all,
Firstly, just to let the mods know, I’ve been in touch with Paul “PH Manager Bloke” Garlick at PH Towers to get his OK prior to posting this.
I work for a registered charity called the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) based in Southampton. We own and operate the 2 largest 3 masted square rigged tall ships in the UK, both of which are designed and built to allow able-bodied and physically disabled people (including wheelchair users) the chance to sail a tall ship on equal terms. The JST’s aims being integration of all, using crewing the ships as the medium to achieve them.
We have been doing this for over 30 years, a long time before accessibility, diversity and inclusion became overused buzzwords. Even after all these years, we are still the only organisation in the world that can achieve it. Even some modern cruise liners state that wheelchair users may not be able to leave their ships in certain ports due to not having suitable boats - we just drive them up straight the beach and dump everyone in the sand (small boats that is, not our ships
).
Sorry to drone on, just a bit of background for you.
I have had an idea of organising a PH event on one of our ships in 2008, which could take
various forms and I’d like to see if there’s any interest out there to see if it’s worth taking further.
Options:
1. A hoon to Southampton, a day out on one of our ships, then everyone could hoon home. I could probably organise some secure parking in the port. We could take a maximum of 50 out for the day, cost would be around £125 per person which includes all food and as many sick bags as you can fill…
2. PH’ers could buy a couple of places on a day sail and maybe donate them to mixed ability folk in their area that would appreciate the chance to sail on a tall ship. Then possibly hoon down on the day for a PH photo shoot.
3. Maybe a PH’er (or Haymarket perhaps) could charter the ship for the day (or even a voyage) and run competitions or work with local charities for the places. Good PR opportunity.
4. We could arrange a PH'er voyage for say 5 or 7 days. For a voyage there would be a max of 40 persons. Cost would be approx £450 for a 5 day, £650 for a 7 day voyage. These costs assume our charitable aims are met so we use our funding to subsidise the cost.
My personal preference (as it meets our aims better) is for a voyage, but we could do anything, we have a bar on board of course...
Thought I'd start a thread to see what interest there is from the forum members.
Cheers

Can't reccomend this enough...
I went on a Tall ship sailing holiday last year in Majorca with the Tall Ships Trust. Might twist Mrs Glade's arm for this one!!
Have to agree there, I did the tall ships race in 1996, and was one of the best experiences I've ever had, would recommend anyone to have a goI went on a Tall ship sailing holiday last year in Majorca with the Tall Ships Trust. Might twist Mrs Glade's arm for this one!!

Now this would make a pleasant change -
I'd much rather be "sailing" - "5 days before the mast" and all that...
Did someone mention a bar ???I'm normally on Steel hulled motorised lumps, known as Seismic Survey Ships! These ships are "Dry" thanks to the regulations thought up by the Norwegians, and forced on the whole Oil industry..

I'd try and talk SWMBO into going along.
Might even get a wooden leg made for the occasion !!
How about learning a couple of sea-shanties!!

Hi all,
I’ve been watching this thread over the last few weeks to see how much interest there is, but purposefully not posting so as not to appear the ‘nagging charity type’.
Interested in a short voyage we have:
Mahatma Bag
Wasted Years
Nic Jones
Steve_D
Condor
Snotrag
Pupp
Andy_sx
Motormad
Interested in just a day sail we have:
Matt172
No preference stated:
Ranger 6
Snoggledog
Glade
Ali_kat
With our summer 2008 programme published today, I thought now would be a good time to see if there’s any more interest to fill the ship completely with PH folk or not. We would need 40 folk to block book a voyage. No worries if there’s not, as just a few of you could book up.
5 day voyages next year are £399 for the first 28 bookings and £449 for the rest. Again I need to say that if I block book the ship for a PH voyage then those prices assume our charitable aims of integration are met which means the charity can subsidise the voyage (better for us if we don’t have to of course but the funding it is available to all if meet our aims).
Over to you lot then to see if we can get this off the ground. Conveyor belt needed perhaps
Cheers

PS to answer Motormad, it’s only dry ship for my officers and we run an honesty bar system – you help yourself, mark it on the tab, pay at the end of the trip. Not sure if that’s a good idea for the PH clan
PPS if anyone wants to go sailing from the 19 - 26 Sept, or 28 Sept - 5 Oct, then PM me for 'a deal'
