I've not been to Hot August Nights but I have been to Reno. It is definately not a tourist destination, it's just one big casino. There are no decent attractions like Las Vegas. If you do go I would suggest you don't plan on spending more than a couple of days in Reno.

Unless of course you're addicted to gambling in which case you'll have a blast.

best car show i've been to
(in Danville - 15-20miles east of San Francisco. the whole high street is shut down for the event and everybody in town and many from across CA, OR and NV come along. there was a bigger classics event 5 days later, about 10 miles south, east of the bay too)

I went a couple of years ago and it was great from a car perspective but Reno (other than the car museum) has little to offer. But it is not far at all to Lake Tahoe (trail riding, quads, jet skis etc etc) and at a stretch you can do the Yos National Park.

The cars even is enormous and tends to take place each day from late afternoon each day. Cars tend to gather everywhere and most of the casinos have a band playing etc in the car park and cars just continuously cruising around. Most of the bands are former 'big' names from the past such as Drifters etc. Good family atmosphere.

If you want formal action better the second week when they have the drag racing. I also think the car auction is the second weeks if you fancy buying anything.

Thats interesting. If we go to the Monterey Weekend instead thats just up the road. The Goodguys do at Pleasanton is just a couple of days after that as well. Plus Danville has the Blackhawk museum and, if you get bored, Arlen Ness HQ is in Dublin which is fairly near.
