Hotels to stay en route to Scotland

Will be leaving London on a Sat afternoon at about 5pm, and want to break a journey up to central Scotland. Any suggestions? Obviously there are zillions of placed on LateRooms etc but they all look rather dreary. I would imagine that I would stop somewhere around Manchester, since I wouldn't get to the Lake District until quite late.

This place isn't bad, just off J17 M6. Decent beer (although not much choice) and food ok too.
