I have to drive down to Cornwall tonight. Leaving at around 10ish ( that will be fun, Fiance is finish work late ).

Thing is sat nav and multimap want to take me down the m3 then a303 ( I think ) on the m5 quickly then off it on to the a30 etc ( basically quite complex ).

The hotel we are going to says on their direction page go down the m4 til the m5 then go down that till the a30. Now that seem very simple and I will be on major roads so I can rant along at 90+ and eat into the 4hr plus trip.

Any one do that trip and which would you recommend at that time ( traffic shouldn't be a problem at that time )

M25, M3, A303, M5, A30.

Quickest way, where are you staying?

Cheers

Guy.

M3 then A303,although the A303 has been shut just past Basingstoke and around Micheldever, late at night, for the past few nights for resurfacing work.

M4/M5 with no little traffic will definitely be quicker than taking the A303. It's further, but 3 lanes all the way instead of a mix of single and dual carriageway (getting increasingly single the further you go).

The A303 route is not complex! It's very well signposted and a quick route.

There are slow points, but late at night, unless for roadworks it's a fast route alternating between single carriageway and dual carriageway (although mostly DC).

There are a few static cameras and a real talivan threat. It's a hell of a lot more interesting then the M4/M5.

I use it at least once per month to get down to Devon from Reading.

Used to do this all the time when I lived in Somerset and it really is 50-50. The distance is almost identical.
Comes down to whether you want a more interesting drive, or one where you're less likely to get held up.

M3 - A303 - A358 - M5 - A30 is my preferred route because the A30's good fun, and at that time of night you won't get held up (in the summer there's always a tailback by Stonehenge).

M4 - M5 is just dull!

There's probably bugger all in it, but at that time of night M4/M5. That'll be a proper 90+, as opposed to the A303 which will drop you to <60 regularly.

M4-M5 only way to go if speed is the issue, plus you are already on the motorway. 303 is a nice drive but way slower.

I agree with M4-M5. I reckon I've done it enough times.

eekWe got a deal from the same company on the grounds that we went to a sales meeting. Admittedly it was cheap, but I'd rather have paid full wack to avoid the slimey little shit who spent 3 hours trying to sell us a time-share. (We stayed in their St Austell place, it was nice enough and the food was good tbh)

Just done it today (although via M11 but that is a different thing)

Easy. M4 - M5 - A30 and you are there biggrin

A303 is more scenic but late at night you wont get to see anything anyway!!!

Have a great time down here - going anywhere nice?

No, my soon to be uncle in law is already a member through his company, he is paid up and booked a slot for this weekend, you can't cancel but you can transfer, so bingo bango I am in, no sales pitch no bill. Awesome.

DEAR GOD ALIVE !

Decided on the m4 m5 route, left at 10pm, got stuck in a jam on m4 at junction 17 for well over an hour, before that got down to 15mph in a single lane for a few miles. Got really late needed a sleep so pulled over for a nap for an hour, eventually got there at 6am. Not fun.

Came home today left Padstow at 20 to one, came back along the a303, that is a bitch, no question about it. took 4 hrs and 20 minutes, going at 90 plus when the road was clear.

All in all definatley think it would be better to just move Cornwall closer to London an stop all this messing around.

Oh yes... have been saying that for years.. Cornwall is so far away from anywhere cry

I can do from Truro to beginning of A303 (J29 M5) in around 45 mins it then takes me well over an hour to two to get to my place of work... suicide passing places are a real awakener though especially with to55ers on the road that just look after themselves and pay no attention to mirrors rolleyes

Still... lovely chilled out place to live biggrin

I drive this every Friday Night/Sunday Night, Guildford to Plymouth.

I hate the A303. You are always following someone. That said, I am sure it is faster than the M4/M5. It takes 3 hours or less on a clear run.

Friday night, leaving at 5:30, I am usually back by 9. Often congested where it goes from dual to single at stonehenge though.

Quickest way from Heathrow is to get a coach to Gatwick, and then get on the plane to Plymouth/Newquay! I reckon you're looking at 2hrs minimum, and 3.5 max. Depends on the timings of the planes leaving Gatwick. It's an hourly service!

I got back from Kennack Sands last night after a week down there with the other half.

on the way down last sat the 303 was closed at 6 am so went the m4 / m5 route then a30, not bad and can keep good momentum.

way back took the 303 instead as i like the road (originally from somerset so drive down a fair bit anyways) and had a clear blast, and thats leaving at mid day from helston and getting back to hempstead in kent for 6 pm (stopped for a bit at exeter services) but had a good high speed blast through. personally the 303 feels quicker (probably due to the fact that its not open motorways and is a more involving drive, more concentration etc) and is a nicer drive for me, and time wise the 303 / 30 route was almost exactly the same time wise from the thames eastury in kent, 6 hours. granted it was rather high speed driving most of the way
