Need information about Tuscany, want to know if anyone had any favourite areas, places to stay etc. Route 99% sorted.
Lucca is beautiful. I rarely want to go back to places I've visited but I was thinking of going back there this year (except I can't afford it and now need a cheap holiday, if you know of any). It's a beautiful town surrounded by medieval walls, nothing much there apart from houses, churches and a couple of towers, one of which has a tree growing on the top of it, but the city is a really lovely place with a nice relaxing atmosphere. http://www.welcometuscany.it/tuscany/lucca/lucca.htm
I'd also recommend San Gimingnano (sp?). It was full of loud American tourists when we went there, but the views from the "Skyscrapers" are breathtaking. http://www.sangimignano.com/sghomei.htm

I was there a few years ago, and will be back there again this year. I found that the landscape became nicer if you went south of Siena, but as Mrs Trackside has said, San Gimignano is worth a visit which is about 1/2 way between Florence and Siena. Other places that are worth going to are San Quirico d'Orcia for the countryside (see pic below), Pienza and Montepulciano.

I also remember the S222 between Florence and Siena being particularly fun, as was the road from Castellina in Chianti to Poggibonsi so go for a drive in that area and I'm sure you won't go wrong
