Fighting Torque

Event for world's fastest cars returns in August

FT had a strong turnout last year
FT had a strong turnout last year
This summer sees the return of an event that will put the world’s fastest cars head-to-head on a one mile stretch of tarmac. Fighting Torque was originally set up to see how cars stack up in the real world, not just in stats at the back of a car mag.

Instead of the traditional quarter mile the event is run over a standing mile which means some cars will be closing in on their top speeds by the end of the strip. Last year the inaugural event took place and 92 cars gathered at Wattisham Airfield for a similar, although shorter test, over a ¾ mile distance.

Cars from major high-performance car manufacturers were strongly represented, such as Lamborghini, Porsche, TVR, Noble, BMW, Mercedes, Chevrolet and Dodge to name but a few. This year's event is at Woodbridge Airfield, Suffolk, on August 10, and cars will run in pairs along the main runway from a standing start. During the run elapsed time and velocity will be captured at the ¼ and 1 mile points using radar timing equipment.

Organiser Jonathan Kay said the event gives people a chance to compare their car against other exotica and find out how it stacks up. ‘This exploration of a car's outer limits is normally the preserve of automotive journalists who regularly conduct performance comparison tests between similar vehicles,’ he said. ‘However, Fighting Torque aims to gather close to 100 high performance sports and supercars together on the same day, at the same venue, and test them under the same conditions. The results will be definitive.’

The event is not designed to be open to highly modified cars and will be run as an ‘invitational’, with owners applying for entry. Cars registered so far include a genuine American Dodge Charger police car in full livery, a Lamborghini Gallardo, Maseratis, Porsche Turbos and GT3s, AMG Mercedes, various  Nobles, Ultima, TVRs, and Dodge Vipers.

Entries are invited by applying on the Fighting Torque website   - www.fightingtorque.org/supercar/  - and are open until 31st July 2008.

Should`nt the title for this be `fastest accellerating car, or fastest car in a straight line?'
Its one thing doing the equivalent of a drag race, and something completely different doing the equivalent of a grand prix. Imagine how a dragster would muller an F1 car on a strip, and how an F1 car would wipe out any drag racer on any track with even slight bends in it!?

I'm guessing the winner will be an Ultima. The Veyron wont be able to get into its top speed stride by then, andf the Ultima will be far enough ahead, so that it wont matter.

Interesting times.

Wonder who won it last year, and what the details are?

The silver Nobel you see in the picture was (if i rightly recall) the fastest overall car on the day. There were other catagories which included fastest modified, fastest TVR (in various guages), fastest standard. If you search through the TVR forum for Fighting Torque you'll find plenty of info and pictures from last year.

Edit;

This years info can be FOUND HERE

Last years INFO & RESULTS and HERE TOO.

worlds fastest car in a straight line over a one mile stretch doesn't quite have the same ring to it....I think all PHers will get the point, and the event looks to be a good one

edit: If you look at the website it says its just a comparison over a 1 mile strech

Your right in what your saying, the two are differant. I interpret (sp?) it as the fastest car from timing light to timing light.

I understand that they expect the cars to handle too but won't be tested. They aren't looking for drag specials but road cars.

Both the Ultima and Noble that won last year can certainly corner too !!

Such a crying shame it's not open to the public (I think it's because it's an active airfield?)

I'd pay to see it.

Theres some serious weaponry entered this year, including an 1100hp Skyline and 800hp Sierra, it will be interesting to see the outcome. Also interesting if a Veyron turns up, they don't "take time to get into their stride" though, they do 0-60 in 2.5secs! Over a mile it would be tough to beat.

i'm also booked, probably be the slowest car there;)
don't think the 1100bhp skyline or the sierra will get the nod, mostly standard(ish) cars

The worlds fastest man runs 100 mtrs in a straight linewink

So in your opinion, what is the fastest out of an F1 car and a dragster?

Anyway....is it fair to say that whoever wins will not be the fastest unless redvictor turns up scratchchin
