Hi all. Just came accross an idea when talking to a friend about the upcoming Gumball Rally 2008. Why don't we have one in the UK/Scotland for those who wont pay the £60,000 entry fee? It's just an idea for now, but me and a few friends are trying to come up with a plan and driving plans so selected drivers would have the UK tour of maybe 2008 or 2009? Just thought id post this so i could get any comments or recommendations. It would be somewhat of a 3 day cruise of approx 500 cars? or more. Let me know your comments.

They do sort of exist already... In the form of regional hoons or runs that many on here do already....

500 cars is a bit optimistic, but you go for it fella...

Ok lets say 500 was abit too much. about 70? I was thinking doing it gumball style? A 3 day run. On each day we pass through checkpoints, and at the end of the day we reach one destination where we stay in a pre paid hotel? for 3 days this lasts. The ending day ends in london. Ive spoken to a few high heads and they all say its possible. what u think?

Right, furthermore news now. Getting the name right, UK Rally. To book all the hotels, with the 70 people attending, there will be a fee. Im looking into it all, because i've got to alert the hotels of what we're doing, when we're doing it. Cars, and also the london council will have to close a few roads off at the finish line, which i must say lads we have to finish off with a bbq and a few pints! Thats just a rough idea. We'll be travelling from the midlands, up north, and alllll the way back down south with the checkpoints which will make it worth the 2-3 days. If you could spread the news, so then we could hopefully open a website, start booking in the cars n so on... It's abit tight for us to run the rally this year, although i would like to, so 2009 comes into play, but we'll have plenty of time then to organise it and make it big! Any suggestions welcome.

False plates may be an idea as half the fun of the Gumball etc is that you have no chance of losing your licence. In this country it will be different story.

True, which is why we have to be a little bit carefull. Thinking about this, isnt there that spray u could get that would cover the plate if it got flashed?

No offence, as it's a decent idea in principle - I've thought of something sismilar myself before as a banger rally.

But if you are talking about circumventing the laws of the land on a public forum, I have doubts over your skills and talents that suggest you are not at a level to construct an event for 500 cars...

Great idea in principle...

But as soon as you put your head over the parapet the BiB, politicians, ragtop newspapers, BBC (Brown Broadcasting Corporation), etc, will be all over this like flies on poo.

Think of the thousands of kittens and babies that will get killed by an event like this! rolleyes

And in the current climate; for every flag waving supporter that loves cars, there will be some loony in a bobble hat chucking eggs (or worse) at the cars in protest...

In Europe it is possible because they love cars, democracy, freedom and people being a little bit naughty. In the UK we do not have the generic love of cars and we certainly don't have democracy or freedom anymore when it comes to driving!

In the Thames Valley forum we frequently have 2-3 day hoons - last year there were 3 big ones; South Wales, South West and Ring/Poland - all of which were a complete hoot and low key. No prizes or time trials; just hooning for fun and decent meals and drinking in the evenings.

I was joking about the false plates by the way, but you get my point. A good idea in principle though mate and good luck with it.

I organise an annual charity rally locally for about 20 cars. That's a royal pain the in arse (although the logistics are different to the checkpoint system)

In your case, the police have to be notified, as do the msa (an event on public highways) etc etc.

Look into it a but further, you'll be put off, trust me.

Have to agree, not a bad idea. However I think to make it more credible it might be an idea to include some well known stretches of driving road, the EVO triangle in Wales for example, or some roads used for top gear filming.
It would probably be idea to include a track day en-route Anglesey perhaps. Not everybody will want to do the track day but to incorporate in the 3 day run might be an idea.

There's also the Petrolhead Nirvana posse that do far more sensibly priced euro-hoons.

Nice idea, but can't see it working.

If you make the event reasonably priced, you will get lots of interest from the sorts of people I wouldn't want to go on the event with.

Recent news --- Just had a chat with the local authorities, they say it is possible with the right amount of time, planning and numbers of cars not exceeding 70 (which was my idea). IF it will be a 3 day event with the expenditure of 2 hotels paid for with their meals, blocking off roads, other side routes, n etc, im sorry to admit but it wont be very reasonably priced. It's not just me thats trying to organise it but ive still got alot of planning to do. A few sponsers would do nicely though!

70 cars? Better find some big hotels then. What's the chances for finding a nice hotel or two with that many rooms free? Possible if you book a very long time ahead maybe....

The word 'cruise' puts me off, as it has all the wrong connotations for me.
