More Eurotrip advice - pension/guest houses etc

Well having got a basic route planned when sitting down to work the costs out I think we need to look at some cost cutting! Acommodation is the main expense especially in Switzerland. I've heard one or two people say they have just called in at places en rout like private houses or privately owned apartments but i'm not sure if we daredo that in case we don't find anywhere! The Mrs won't camp either so that's out!

How do you guys do it?
