Euro road trip- Advice needed....Please!!!
Discussion
Hi all, I am in the final throws of organising my first driving tour. My intention is to start early on 23rd May 2010 and will take me to Stuttgart for 2 nights. Next will be an overnight stay just before Stelvio. This is where I need assistance please. My route on Google maps is in order: SP104, Passeo stelvio, Bormio, Livignio, Ova Spin, Chur, Bellinzona.
My questions are: Is it realistic I could do this journey in one day and is there the possibility of getting to menton just East of Monaco also on the same day?
Is it possible to do this that time of year? (Last week of May 2010)
Is this a bad way to do these roads?
I see photos of the Stelvio pass looking upwards. With this route, I assume I will be travelling down!!?? (East to West on the map)
Google says this is 5 hours 25 mins.....bearing in mind the type of roads and possible traffic....is this realistic?
Are there any de-restricted roads around Stuttgart?
If you can help, please do, before I book an absolute lemon of a journey.
Thanks in advance to all and apologies if this duplicates other posts.

Regarding de-restricted Roads around Stuttgart the A81 south to Swiss border has some areas which you can drive fast but only once your quite awayout of Stuttgart (through the herrenberg tunnel). Getting down to stuttgart is 16 hours drive from manchester or 12 hours from london (including he crossing on euro star) if you take regular breaks. Not sure about the rest of your journey.
May is a great time to do this since all the roads will be open and melt water wont be an issue.
A bad way of doing this road is in a Hummer (as suggested by a certain T.V advert) or with a small petrol tank.

Sorry, where's SP104?
Anyway, you mention it's near Stelvio, in which case your journey sounds ok.
But - where are you staying near Stelvio? If you're approaching from the north, you really should try and hit the Fluela Pass on the way between Davos and Stelvio, and when you leave Stelvio it'd be wise to try and hit the Julier Pass on your way. Approach Julier from St Moritz, it's better that way...

Further to Verysideways post...
the one thing i would warn is that if you're going in May be prepared that some of the passes (including Stelvio) may not be open. a couple of weeks later and you should be fine but then you're into the caravan/tourist season.
it would be very frustrating for you if you went all that way only to find some of the passes closed.

Ok. Trying to possibly re-jig things as a back up. Firstly what are the roads like during mid to end of July? i.e Are they full of caravans etc as it is in mid summer? or if I stick with end of May (as would prove best by my diary anyhow) Are all passes such as Julier, Fluela, Stelvio and San Bernadino likely to be shut at the same time or is a higher one likely to be shut but others open? Is it possible to detour round these without double backing on yourself if they are shut. Really novice questions, I know.
Also.....What is the name of the hotel on top of Stelvio? I have seen it mentioned on a few occassions but no mention of a name.
Thanks all. Happy New Year.

Yeah...Something like that. If I could afford it, I'd be first on the list but sadly I can't. I need to do this on a shoe string if it's gonna happen. Thanks

Thanks Harsh. I may just do that. Want to look in to as much this end first. Maybe I can run my ideas by you for your opinion? Do I ask for you or speak to a colleague? I think I'm virtually there but unfortunately I'm going to have to gamble on hitting the passes on 24th May for 2 days. There is simply no other week in the year I can do. (How can my year be restricted to 1 week and yet only in the first week of the year?? Talk about wishing your life away!)
Thanks again
Thanks again
