Hi guys,

I am taking the head off my wifes Tigra as the HG has gone. In order to get the cambelt off I need to remove the drive belt pulley thats in front of the crank. The Haynes Manual suggests to put the car in 1st gear and then undo the retaining bolt. However this just turns the engine over.

If I were to lock the cam pulleys in place would this enable me to undo the nut?

Cheers

I wouldn't do that; try using a higher gear (say 4th) and have someone push really firmly on the brake.

If you lock the camshaft you will damage the cambelt,do not try it!!! try locking the flywheel at the starter ring gear if you can.The only way I do it is with an air gun,its so easy ,if you can get access to one.

Just undo the four small bolts that hold the pulley on,leave the large cantre bolt that just holds the crank sprocket on.
If you think you`re having trouble now wait until you get to the manifold/throttle body area.

lol I have sorted most of the air hoses on the manifolds so this is the last thing to sort.

Just got the misses to push on the breaks in 1st and theres a lot more resistance before but still turns over. Shall get one of my mates round to push the breaks down in a manly way...oh and will try 4th smile

I did read about the trick with the starter, however thats a no go as 1/4 of the engine is now in my garage.

just a flick on the starter, remove coil so it wont start and away you go

Make sure you're actually undoing it too - some cars are left hand thread (no idea if that's the case on a Tigra)
