Poorly Mondeo Diesel MK3, suggestions?
Discussion
Hi,
My poor old Mondeo is a little bit ill. It's a 2006 MK3 2.0l TDCI (Duratorq 130ps)
Started a week or so ago, noticed a bit more of the old black smog than ususal. Doesnt seem to be burning oil though, this may be a red herring and it's just usual soot.
Progressed to a wierd hesitation when cruising along, with very little thottle input the car will judder as if it's missing on a cylinder. Bit more pressure on the go pedal and it vanishes.
I thought it may be a clogged injector, not letting anything through at lower pressures, stuck a couple of bottles of that fuel system cleaner stuff through (for what it's worth) no joy. Still there.
Could still be a dodgy injector though I guess.
Noticed today what sounded like a unusual induction noise, air rushing when I accelerate, possible boost leak? Hard to see the pipes after the turbo but it's all sound from airbox to turbo inlet though.
It still starts perfectly, idles fine, and gets around fine too, other than the cruising judder. Just looking for ideas as to where to have a prod this weekend.
I'm hoping not to hear that the Delphi common rail system is going to give up the ghost, I understand they arent the best out there are are damn expensive part to replace.
Cheers
Dave

It's a boost leak in the pipe near the EGR. It's common as muck - I doubt there's a Mk3 TDCI on the road that hasn't had the same issue at least once in it's life. Pipe is about £50 and a 20 minute job to replace.
We had an identical thread on here about the same problem earlier in the week...

Edit: Linked post, last updated yesterday - even the thread title is almost then same.

more than likely the intercooler to EGR pipe split - if needed i will nip out at some point and get a photo of my engine bay with that pipe highlighted to help you out
That sir would be bloody fantastic! Thank you all very much for the help! The photo below is a close up of the area where the oil dipstick is, the black tube im pointing to is the one that has potentially split - best thing is toget your hand round it and feel for a split - last time it split on mine it was out of view so it all looked fine
iirc if you google ford wiki you should find a step by step guide to swapping that pipe
btw im not sure if you have a a euro3 or a euro4 engine but if you have a euro3 (Mine is a euro3 - you can tell if you have a euro3 if your egr valve does not have wiring coming off it, if it does its a euro4) but if it is a euro3 it is worth blocking the EGR - it does improve how the car drives and cuts down on smoke out the back

Sorry to bump a ghost thread but could someone help me out? I'm experiencing similar issues with my 2008 Ford Mondeo. Its a 1.8 TDCi and for the last 6 months or so has been having an intermittent engine malfunction. It's got worse over the last month with it happening pretty much every time you drive it. It's also smoky, not as fuel efficient (probably around 400 miles per tank whereas before it was almost 600) and sounds like a bag of spanners. It's done just under 80,000 miles. It had a new alternator in March this year.
Took it into ford last week to get a major service (it was due anyway) in the hope that changing the fuel filter would solve it. Nope and helpfully Ford wouldn't plug it in for me unless I rebooked another time.
It's going to a local garage on Thursday for some investigations but when they plugged it in they seemed a bit clueless as to where to start... I sense it could get costly so any ideas would be most appreciated.

Have you tried looking at the solutions that everyone has posted for the original post in this thread?Took it into ford last week to get a major service (it was due anyway) in the hope that changing the fuel filter would solve it. Pretty easy to check and The most likely cause of your problems.

Thanks, will get the garage to check it on Thursday. Original post didn't mention engine malfunction (and subsequent limp home mode) though, is that likely to be caused by the same thing?Pretty easy to check and The most likely cause of your problems.
