2004 Galaxy auto box problem

Hi folks, my old mans' galaxy seems very unwilling to change gear until it's been driven for upto maybe 10 minutes, then it reverts to normal function.

Apparently you can't dip the oil level but have to drain it and refill. Are these classic symptoms of an impending catastrophic failure or could we hope a gearbox service will sort us out?

Well for anyone else who might be interested, my Dad spoke to a recommended independent gear box guy today.

Prognosis is not good from what I could understand. From what I can gather it is an electrical fault requires a full replacement job which the rather vague figure of 700-1400 quid mentioned.

Any of this ring any bells, internet knowledge, ..... assemble!

Although modern cars can be a pain. I came across a Jag X-type that lost all drive recently, auto box.

Places were quoting £2-3k or thereabouts for a replacement box. Effectively car is scrap

Thanks Andy, I'll pass it on...but I dont think the guy wants the car anymore. And travelling to England for repair would just add to costs again.
He found a guy needing an engine for one, so will recoup some costs by selling the car to him with any luck.

If it moves under it's own power and works OK when warm then it is probably saveable.

Drain the oil & refill, have the garage make sure they set the oil level PRECISELY AS THE WORKSHOP MANUAL SAYS and you should be fine.

Don't use anything other than the factory recommended oil - if it has a spec then use the cheapest stuff that meets the spec.

In my experience way too many people grossly over-repair after assuming the worst and barely putting effort in to see what the true situation is. The above will cost very little in the scheme of things and will probably fix the problem.

If the box has a filter screen, changing that & renewing the fluid would be a good start point.
