I think they were ok before some idiot at vauxhall in the marketing department decided they would be ok with the same oil for 20,000 miles they hold 3 liters and mine is fithy and loaded with carbon after 5k so no wonder they dont last ,You'd be better selling it before it blows up though, they are terrible engines.
I was thinking if the egr was off so it wasnt eating its own s
t it might run a bit cleaner and get a few more to the gallon...Try disconnecting the MAF sensor and drive it up the road. If there's a difference immediately then it's a good sign of a faulty MAF. I had to rebuild one recently after a cam chain failure and believe me, they are more trouble than they are worth!!!!!! 
The one I did had the same problems after and before and once I disconnected it it ran fine for a while then hit limp mode again. I threw a new one on it and it was fine.

You're better off with a Y17DT engine which are more economical in the long run. FIAT never have and never will build a decent engine. And if they have I must have been asleep when they did.
Oh! And pray the injectors don't go wrong cos they're almost £400 a pop and you have to change all 4.

I agree, and in hindsight would definitely agree that the 2.0L twin cam in the 131 was a formidable engine. But you name me an engine that they have made in the 2000's that is simple to work on, doesn't have major faults and is generally worth the time and cost of fixing. Maybe I've been unlucky but EVERY Fart I've worked on has been nothing but trouble and cost a fortune every time it goes wrong. I'm sure they think they can charge Ferrari prices just cos they have a link to them.
We in the trade know them as Fix It Again Tomorrow. It didn't get the accolade overnight.
You can use this thread as an argument site if you like or maybe with your vast wealth of experience of having worked on them you could shed some better light than me and help the guy with his problem, rather than concentrating on splitting hairs and fronting a worthless disagreement?
Good luck with fixing your problem and hope something I've told you from my woeful experience has helped.

After the late 90's, a lot of car technology has got too technical for it's own good.
It is all great when it works, but as you say, when things go wrong, they can be so difficult to diagnose, and sometimes repair cost can often make it uneconomical to repair.
And some of the random connections between devices in cars...it's mental.
I seen a Saab 9-3 turbo once that the heater etc started playing up. Next thing radio died...then the car would no longer run.
The CAN connection with the radio, because it died, everything on the CAN stream would no longer work, including the damn engine !!

I work for the group can get a big % off cars if i wanted. Apart from company cars the car park is full of other make cars. Says it all really.

Funny how when I worked for Honda UK in 1999/2000 ALL the workers there owned a Honda. Even the head valeter bought a brand new Integra Type R. I still own a Type R Accord today and I've scrapped more Farts than I care to remember. I'd be annoyed if I won one in a raffle!!

Never seen one I liked style wise, never had a good experience working on one, never been happy seeing one leave the garage just knowing it's gonna come back with an irate customer who won't understand it's a FIAT.
The new(ish) 500 Arbarth. Hmmm? Ugly! Supposedly good fun but how can you have fun in a small car that couldn't be had for a bag of sand like a MK2 Golf? AND... for how much?! You just know it's gonna cost you in the long run.
In my experience, if you buy a FIAT, treat it like a Saturday night special....... Have great fun driving it hard, but for lordy's sake pack it up and send it off quick once you've had your fun cos you know it's gonna be a pain in the arse for the rest of the time you have it with you.

My 13 year old 220bhp Fiat which does 60 hard miles everyday to work and back says otherwise.My 2003 Stilo JTD is still going strong at 84k now with all the toys and trinkets working except the alarm unit which has give up a while ago............ The mileage went up then down when the EGR stuck, but 20 mins with the inlet cleaner to free it up saw it back to full health. I've neglected the old girl a bit the last year or so, lots of short journeys and no fresh oil or filter and it's been fine, but perhaps I've been lucky
My recent contact with local Italian car specialists shows that in the case of Alfa's at least it's the GM based engines which cause more problems than the Fiat/Alfa ones. Go figure !!
