I am currently building a 1098 engine for my girlfriends Morris with a few choice mods. Does anybody know if theis head will definately fit a 1098 block. I know a 12G940 head will fit but this one apparently does not have the castings according to the seller. Can anyone give me a definate answer?

These site will give you loads of answers and help but from what if this head doesn't have the correct casting numbers give it a wide berth and get one that does.
What mods are you planning?

The 12G940 is a large bore cylinder head; whilst it will physically drop onto the small bore engines (including your 1098) the exhaust valves will likely hit the deck area of the block. To resolve this you can get cut-outs machined into the block. The water galleries at the front of the head don't usually align to the block very well either, so some attention will likely be required here.
FWIW the vast majority of 1275 A series engines used the 12G940 casting. The exceptions are Cooper S/1300GT etc. which are much rarer heads.
A much better solution would be a 12G295 since this is designed for the small bore engines but has the open combustion chamber design of the large bore heads, larger valves and better flowing ports. These heads are relatively rare however.

The 12g940 is the later performance head as used on later coopers and mg metro's (1275).
There is also a low compression 1275 head, which I don't remember the part code for.
As mr2mike stated you have to machine the block to take it.
The standard performance head is the 12g295, but these can be quite difficult to get hold of.

The 12G940 was used in virtually all 1275 engines after the Cooper S, irrespective of the state of tune. The original 1275GT mini had a 12G940, as did the 1275 Marina and the Maestro and Montego. The 12G940 was also fitted to the standard 62bhp 1275 Metro, as well as the MG Metro and the MG Turbo versions. However, the castings do vary between A and A+ engines, even though they carry the same number.Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
