Guys,my 05 dispatch 1.9 has what seems to be some kind of fueling problem, It's started bogging down and pouring smoke out of the exhaust, and it stinks of diesel when it does this, there is no pattern to it, hot, cold doesn't seem to matter, can sometimes be cleared by lifting off and then flooring the throttle or dipping the clutch and raising the revs, once its going its fine, happy to do 80 on the motorway, seems to be more prone when pulling away, my local diesel engine expert suspects the egr valve, any thoughtson what it may be and how I fix it?

Yes could be the EGR they are realy bad news for economy and poluting the engine
you could make a blanking plate to block the dam thing up!! best thing i did on my van , better to drive, econonomy improved, the oil stays cleaner longer .....

Im liking the sound of that, this van has been super reliable over the last 165000 miles, all ive had to do is service it and change discs n pads n exhaust etc, i'm a petrol head i dont know much about diesels so at the risk of seeming stupid, what does the egr valve look like, where do i find it and how do i blank it off???

Is it the turbo diesel, or is it normally aspirated? If turbo, then a split boost hose could cause the problems you are seeing.

From memory it has a pipe comes off the exhaust maifold and comes round the front of the engine to the inlet manifold, hopefully you can undo it at the the exhaust maifold and make a solid gasket out of a bit of tin slip, it in and give it a try..

It's the normally aspirated 1.9 XUD engine, if I blank it off will it affect the emisions come MOT time?
