As a future project for when I have some money and spare time, I am considering slotting a Jaguar XK6 engine into an old Series 3 Land Rover - resulting in somewhat of a q-car. Well, I say an XK6 engine - it will actually be a J60 as they are 1/3 of the price and my friend is always buying spare ones for his CVR(T)

Now, my immediate problem is fitting the engine under the bonnet. Length isn't an issue as Land Rover used to offer a Rover 6cyl as an option, but the Xk6 is a rather tall lump, and there isnt a great deal of room between axle, engine and bonnet with the Rover 2.25 4 cylinder engine, which is about 2/3 the height. I dont want to have to modify the front axle as I want to retain 4WD, and I certainly dont want a bonnet bulge
I know Jaguar dry-sumped the D-type engines to get a lower bonnet line, would it be possible for me to do the same? Are the parts still available and not silly money?

The best thing to do in my opinion is to speak to a Jaguar specialist with racing experience like Chesman Engineering. They are in Coventry - speak to Steve Pearson on 02476 689665.

I don't see why it would be a problem, and given that you can use the Jag to LT77 bellhousing on the Land Rover 5 speed manual the conversion should be relatively straightforward.

my solution would be a suspension lift and bump stops lowered so the axle misses the sump or maybe you could modify the sump so the lowest point isnt where the axle sits???

Gavin - when I scrape the funds together and get serious about the project I will give them a call! Series Land rovers had an earlier 4-speed gearbox, but now you mention it, upgrading to the LT77 from a defender would not only end up with a stronger box but also a permanent 4WD transfer box too. it would involve me having to cut'n'shut the bulkhead floor for the different gearlever arrangement though but oh well.

Powerstroke - I hadnt thought of that. I could indeed fit the longer spring hangers from the 1-ton military version (would enable me to fit bigger tyres too. It would only give a few inches or so but it might just work!

One other thing now I am thinking about it is that before you leap to the conclusion that you need a dry sump can you modify the sump you have so that the capacity is where the clearance problem isn't. That will be much, much cheaper and simply down to having a fabricator make a pick-up tube that sits in the correct place and modifying the existng sump by machining the areas of concern away and welding plate in place of what has been removed.
