Quick question,

If you have a full engine recondition, or buy a fully reconditioned and rebuilt engine, does this usually include the oil pump?
It’s a standard Honda engine if that’s important.

You would need to ask whoever reconditioned or rebuilt it.

The terms can mean virtually anything depending on who's supplying it. In many cases mean very little is done or replaced.

They problem is that they are saying its not normal to replace an oil pump during an engine recondition but the pump had done 100k and it failed 500 miles after the overhaul.

Given it's about the most vital item inside an engine any reputable reconditioner would replace or overhaul the oil pump. However the cheap and cheerful places do little more than powerwash and paint old engines and then try and wriggle out of any warranty claims. They're little more than con artists. Next time go to a reputable place and check the rebuild specification before you part with any money. Caveat emptor.

The business is very well known and I have not seen anything other than praise for them. I got the car second hand with it having had the engine overhauled 400 miles previous.

As already stated. If it's a reputable engine re-conditioner who sell these routinely and not on a bespoke basis.
There will be paperwork to detail exactly what "reconditioned" means in their eyes. So go check the receipt and paperwork you were given

But as stated there are many cowboys who to them a reconditioned engine is a steam clean and coat of paint on the outside of the engine.

The invoice states 'Supply and fit Fully Reconditioned F20C Engine'

If they supplied the engine surely it doesn't matter about oil pumps or whatever, it must be under warranty regardless.

Do they have a web site where you can see the specification of 'fully reconditioned'?

I'm guessing they'd claim the warranty only applied to the engine purchaser, not any future owners of the car.

Have they told you to get lost and won`t do anything for you ?? The oil pump on a "Fully Reconditioned Engine" should not fail after 500mls,in fact nothing should fail at all!!end of,no arguments. If they are a reputable outfit with a good reputation I can not understand why they are trying to get out of it?? There must be more to this? It may be the fact that your the second owner of the engine and the original warranty was with the previous owner.Have a word with AERA engine builders association and show them a copy of the original invoice together with the warranty document. The same goes with the RAC or AA if you are a member.

Then it's all academic because you have no contract or relationship with the reconditioner and no recourse over their actions. For a second hand car bought as seen you also have no recourse over the seller unless something specific was in writing about the engine condition.

^ You pipped me to it smile

OP, can I ask how do you know the oil pumps failed? Reason I ask is there could be lots of reasons for lubrication issues which aren't related to the pump. Some people are shockingly quick to blame the builder or garage these days. I'm not saying that about you though.
