Hi,
I am now ready to reassemble my 3.9 Rover V8 having had it's carnk reground by 0.010"

I have a set of bearing shells for main and big end but oddly in the main bearing set there is only one shell with thrust faces - there are the correct number of shells (10 in total) my questions are:

1. Is this normal?
2. I assume that I fit the shell with the thrust faces to the block?

I'd like to begin assembly tomorrow morning so over to the PH technical folks for advice.

Been years since I had one apart, but good chance yes the centre main only has thrusts on one half.

It'd be difficult to put them in the wrong place.

If I remember correctly the centre main and cap have thrusts!

Just checked a spare 3.5, in the garage, and block and cap have thrusts.

It depends on the brand. Nowadays a single thrust is common place for a lot of engines. Also you can't really fit them the wrong way up, the upper shell will have a hole for the oil reach the crank.

Hi,
thank you for the replies and a good point regarding the oil hole; thinking through it I decided the thrust would be on the block side as that would withstand the endthrust better than the cap would. The old shells had thrust faces on both shells.

Good speedy result as usual from here and means I can get on with reassembling the engine in the morning.

Have a good weekend all!

I think my 4.6 had single shell thrusts....I definitely had one engine like that. Just cant remember specifics as it was years ago.

If there was an option though, I'd opt for full 360 thrusts.

As well as the oil hole, the little notches and alignment bits on the bearing wouldnt allow a wrong placement

Thank you for the replies, I was very sad last Saturday morning when I left the garage because that morning I opened the door with the intention of closing it on a ready to install engine. Sadly although the machine shop had checked that the thrust bearing fitted in the reground crank they failed to verify that the shells were for the correct application. Admittedly I didn't check either so after oiling various parts of the block I placed the thrust bearing in the block and found that it was too big - the sets were for 4.0 / 4.6 not 3.5 / 3.9 / 4.2 OH DEAR I said. The machine shop was shut so I had to wait until Monday to discuss the problem.

I collect the correct shells this Friday.

The car has been off the road for two months now and I really miss driving it!
