I am finally reassembling my 3.9 Rover V8 after a long wait and have a problem with the rear oil seal - I have installed it with the lip facing inwards, lip and crank running faces well greased with the sealing perimeter hylomar smeared to seal it to the block / cap. Having torqued down the cap the seal squeezes it's way out.

I can't recall this happening before, any advice on solutions?

I thought using red hermetite or maybe a smear of evo-stik until it has set (instead of hylomar) and then torquing?

Suggestions please....

Fit the seal after the main cap is fitted. Ensure both mating surfaces are clean and dry, with perhaps a very light smear of sealant.

The seal outer edge & the area its clamped into must be absolutely clean and free of ANY oil, lubricant or other contaminant (incl sealants) or it is likely to pop out in service. Use thinners or brake cleaner to clean the surface, not petrol.
Once its in & done up I put a bead of sealant round the edge.

It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to NOT put GREASE on the seal. Use engine oil instead. Grease will cause the seal to leak.

It's pointless putting sealer on the outside of a seal, it will do nothing. It needs to be at the joint interface to be effective same as a gasket.
Otherwise dont put any on at all.

There should be NO sealant used on that interface on the RV8.
I've never had one come out in service(yet!)

Job done, genuine parts seal fitted with dry outer. I used a pot noodle container with the top part cut off to ease the seal over the end of the crankshaft.

Thank you for the advice.
