Hi Guys, I appear to have a 1mm by 1mm (approx) gouge running around my front brake discs which appear to be matching on either side. I've had a quick look and couldn't see anything ontop of the pads. is this likely to be a normal occurance from heat or could it be something more sinister? I'll be taking wheels off this weekend and possibly calipers to have a nose.

depends on how worn the discs are, but sometimes its just something that happends with pad wear. We have similar but nothing to worry about. Inward scoring could be a stone grinding it.

if the disc, and pad, remaining thicknesses are within the service manual wear limits on average (= heat capacity, basically) I'd not worry about it unless you can see cracking in the disc that arises directly from this ridge. They do happen.

IOW just keep an eye on it and replace as a set when it is due. Don't worry unnecessarily until then.

the discs and pads are probably 20k old at most as I do about 30-40k a year. I'll keep an eye on it and see.
