Hi all. Tried to start my vehicle. Turned the key and absolutely nothing. Not turning over,no clicking but lights come on dash and battery is fine. However when I fitted and made connection between starter motor and positive terminal of battery using exciter wire it then turns over and starts as per normal. Any ideas why it's not staring using ignition??

What car?
Could there be an immobiliser chip or tag fallen out?

If the engine starts and runs without cutting out, the immobiliser is de-activated.

Ignition switch/wiring problem from the sounds of it.

Try wiggling the key around a bit in the ignition switch whilst you've got it cranking, or try wiggling the wires behind if you can reach.

As above I would suspect an ignition barrel/starter relay problem or possibly bad wiring (oxidized/broken, corroded earth).

My old Astra used to do this. Sometimes once a week or other times it would not happen for months.
Despite going back to the dealer numerous times the only way to cure it was to diconnect the battery for a minute or so (to reset the ECU?), after this it would be fine again
Used to keep a 10mm spanner in door pocket.
