Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm just wondering if any of you could tell me if its Possible to re-use the crankshaft and pistons etc In a new top hat linered block. On A P38 Range Rover 4.0L SE. I can pick one of these Blocks up for about £1K and am hopeful it would cure my overheating issue. I know it is not an ideal fix, but I'm just looking at getting this 18 year old rig back on the road, very very cheaply, But more Robust. Using just new bearings and shells, Piston O-ring seals, gaskets, and Poss ARP studs. Although I want to do it cheaply ATM my position may change in the future and look to upgrade, so don't want to damage the block. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you are not intending to up the performance (at this stage) then I would just buy another engine and plonk it in. If you are trying to get the RR back on the road you have more to do than mess with rebuilding an engine.
Later you can build a new engine in slow time and include all the trick bits.

An 18 year old radiator might be the cause of your overheating, I'd flush out the radiator and engine and try again with a new thermostat and fresh coolant with the anti-freeze specified for the engine. A few hours with a hosepipe and £15 of coolant and thermostat is about as cheap as it's going to get.

Why do you think your block is the cause of overheating? Unless there's a physical fault like a crack in a waterway then it can't be.

Some of the RV8's were prone to dropped liners and split liners so it is possible. Any decent machine shop should be able to check this if you take the block to them.

But absolutely unless any of the components are damaged then you do not need to replace them. And for a standard engine ARP studs would be of no real benefit.

But as others have said, be sure that the block is actually the culprit before going nuts.

Dave the rv8 blocks go porous behind the liners, the head gaskets dont seal the top of the liner on a stock motor, hence the pressure of the cylinder creeps down the side of the liner, we pressure test them to 150psi and warm the block to 100 deg c, 9 out 10 blocks fail!
