I need to shift an old iron block from the garage as I'm moving house soon.

I've removed the pistons and crank but the block is still too heavy to manage into the boot of a car. It's a VR6 block and heavier than it looks.

Will it break up if I clout it with a sledgehammer? Anyone ever done that before?
It'll be easier to sneak it into the local dump's metal container if it's in bits. They've moaned at me before for chucking big car parts in there, so I'd throw it when they're not looking smile

I tried a few local scrap metal merchants to see if they'd come and take it away but they're only interesed in coming out for copper, ally, lead and stainless steel.

I'd ask a neighbour to help you boot it. Then take it to a scrapyard. Doubt you'll make an impression with a hammer although you could break your wrist trying.

bury it in the garden.

solves your problem and you never know, in a few years time that block could be the subject of a "look what i found buried" thread on here.

Can't you just leave it there?

The s that used to circulate like vultures seem to have dried up, but I bet if I left a block by the side of the road it wouldn't stay there long!

Cheers for the suggestions guys smile

I like the flower pot idea! I suppose I could shift it into the garden and stick some dirt and cheap plants in the bores, lol.

Get some friends to help, use ratchet straps/tow rope to support it, then weigh it in as scrap. Expect around 10p per kg.

I weighed in some copper and an old cast iron bath tub the other day. For iron/steel etc they were paying £160/ton

Bath tub worked out at about £20.

Tether it to the house. Will help to keep the house on the ground if there are hurricanes.

Resolve neighbourhood disputes by filling the bores with red bull cans and launching it at your adversaries from a trebuchet.
