2.0 8v vw bora, low speed in 1st gear

Seem to have lost most of its power in 1st, will only do about 20mph at 3000 or 4000 revs, feels like driving a van. The use to be able to easily do 35/40 in 1st.

Car drives right enough and pulls well in all other gears, just first seems weak.

Any ideas what the problem might be

When it does this. Is the engine up to NOT? if the engine is cold it maybe the ecu stopping you ruining the pistons.
