Long story short took my vauxhall in for some upgrade work to be done and now told the oil pump has failed, it's not the prv as that has been changed so what could make it fail without warning or previous symptoms?

You dont state what engine, nor the actual mode of failure.

So hard to say. Such failure is rare, but at the same time some engines may have issues where the pump setup can fail for one reason or another.

So it isnt perhaps a case if failed there and then, but was in a damaged state that had it been used much longer could have failed totally.

It's a vx220 turbo it's strange as I never had a problem before but now seems to have failed and I was lead to believe they hardly ever fail completely , would you expect to see damage on the original?

So has this 'failed' after the rebuild or is the guy doing the build saying it is not in good condition and should be replaced as a precaution?
If it 'failed' after the build how does he know it failed and what other damage has this done?

And again still no details on the mode of failure.

What exactly were the "upgrades" and what was the mode of failure ?

If you're seriously looking for help then you need to give a full explanation, not a few half assed sentences.
'PRV' What is PRV?

I had loss of oil pressure after having a turbo failure in my Zafira GSI, took the oil pump out and stripped it these 2 bits of turbo bearing were under the oil pressure relief valve piston, as you can see they are tiny so takes very little to cause a problem. I doubt your garage has replaced the oil pressure relief valve as it is only a piston and a spring, the oil pump is actually a pretty strong design, I would ask them to specifiy what they believe is actually broken with it. I stripped and inspected mine and was effect otherwise and is still going strong now.

they ended up changing the valve but was still sticking .their thinking is the barrel for it mush have been scored so rather safe than sorry the pump ended up getting changed. the initial work was for an uprated turbo and clutch.
