Strange BMW E39 noise

when rev'd up without clutch pressed in the noise doesn't happen. Press the clutch in, noise happens when rev'd. In gear, driving, clutch out noise seems to happen as the revs changed during accel' or decel' but not all the time. Any ideas? Noise here http://youtu.be/bZeoOAgtmuo
First and second time I rev it you can here the whining noise, bit like an electric train or a fan. Third time, clutch out, no noise.
As it happens durning driving with clutch out I'm not so sure it's the release bearing.
