I've just bought a 2005 Toyota Corolla Verso, 1.6 - it's fvcking dull but it was cheap.

It has the following issue.

Air con OFF - Rev engine to limiter and sounds tight as a nut - no problems.
Air con ON - Rev engine to approx 4.2k RPM and it emits a horrific screech.

This was a mates car and he never used the air con, ever, so it's been turned off for 3 years. Oh and the air con doesn't actualy blow cold, no suprise there.

I'm thinking this points toward a knackered compressor clutch/bearing?

The quesion is, how hard/difficult are they to swap out as you seem to be able to pick up a second hand unit from ebay for beween 40-75quid. I've never touched anything air con related before so would be wary of spewing nasty gases all over the place. I realise that once bolted in place it would then need to be regassed by a specialist.

Any advice people?

ps. My mate is happy to pay for getting this fixed, car is otherwise sound.

Siezed air con comp.

When the air con is "off" all is well.

Air con "on" compressor wont turn and belt is slipping on pulley, Hence noise.

IIRC the rev counter is fed info by the alternator speed so if the belt slips the alternator is runing slow and the rev counter will not be accurate, making you think the car is not reving.

New pump and re gas/sevice system!

Plenty of the "Mobile" A/C services will pop by, degas your system, then you can swap the pump over, give them a call and they will come back and re-gas it. Usually costs about £50-70 approx.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Getting the system de-pressurised then bolt in new unit seems easy enough, probably!!

Good opportunity to change the drive belt too.

This makes sense, but.

just been out for a look and (with aircon on) the compressor pulley is turning freely, rev the engine and at approx 4k+ it starts to screech like a raped duck smile, there's no sign the belt is slipping though. The horrific noise seems to be coming from within the compressor.

I do know for a fact that my mate never ran with the AC on, cos he's tight. It's not been used for several years therefore will be dry as a bone I would guess. I think the best next step is to get an AC specilist to have a butchers before I spend on any new (or reconditioned) hardware.
