Driving home yesterday morning i got turbo failure on my mondeo. Engine started running away so dipped the clutch and pulled over and switched ignition off, engine carried on. Should have put the hand brake on and tried to force it into gear to stall the engine but being surprised by the whole thing didn't think and let it run. Then got out of the car.

I was barely out of the car when the engine stopped, no big bang, just kind of stopped, think it ran out of oil. So it was probably only running away for 15 seconds.

I haven't started the car but if you just turn the key enough to engage the starter it will turn over so it's not seized, but the engine did drink all its own oil.

Seeming as the car has had new, clutch/DMF, starter, battery, discs and pads all round in the past 12 to 18 months it is a shame to scrap it, but it's not worth a new engine.
However if it was just fitting a new turbo, it might be worth saving.

So is there anyway fo telling if the engine is knackered without going to the cost of putting a new turbo on? i dont want to spend loads of money just to find out it needs scraping.

would you fix it? can a engine survive runaway undamaged? i have no previous experience of this engine runaway so please excuse my ignorance.

Have replaced turbos on engines that have done this & got away with it but its a chance you take & it's not a cheap one!!
The only way you can check it is to disconnect the boost hose from the inlet fill the car up with oil & start it, if you get no horrible noises then hopefully it will be fine but when you replace the turbo make sure every part of the inlet is cleaned out as its
Common for oil to collect especially in the inter cooler & you don't want it to pick up on this residual oil when it's all back together smile

You say it drank all it's oil, but 15 seconds doesn't seem long enough. Have you looked at the dipstick? If it still has oil in it there's a good chance it will be ok.
