Hi guys, hope you can help.

I have an ongoing problem with a friend's van that won't start on the key but will if you 'help' it with a drop of squirt up the pipe. It will start every time with a bump and runs absolutely fine other than the starting issues. It does however have the EML on and I scanned it for the DTC and got a map sensor fault. (P0105 from memory). He says it was on before the starting problem happened and I'm not convinced that it is causing the starting faults. My first thoughts were the ECU on the back of the engine but it's a Z17DTL and not the reliable Izuzu Y17DT engine. nono

My next thought was the crank sensor but I can't see how that would only cause an injection fault at start up and not all the time. He drives it 100 miles round trip every day and without any problems other than the start up issue. confused

I would really like to nail this problem for him as he just got raped by some cowboy down south for over £500 for a 'service' (the oil looks blacker than the night sky) and a set of glow plugs that 'would fix it' for him and obviously didn't. shoot

Has anyone had this problem or could throw up some ideas please? I'm fairly up with Vauxhalls in general but have never had the pleasure of working on this engine before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a fairly common problem on high milers as a few friends have experienced it. Not 100% sure what the fix is though.

Sounds like low pressure on the fuel rail, with a bit extra cranking speed it is enough to start the injectors, by using a quick wiff or a bump.

Try to find a leaking injector by blocking off each outlet in turn at the fuel rail, if it starts you know which one is leaking (faulty).

Maybe you have a leaking pressure relief valve on the end of the rail, remove the return pipe and blank it run engine and check for the valve loosing diesel.

Nearly sure it is down to low fuel pressure/leak back at cranking speed

Hope this helps??
