I'm having trouble installing a new set of belts on a 2000 Isuzu Trooper Diesel. I can't get the new alternator belt on as the alternator doesn't seem to swing in quite far enough to get the new belt over. Old belt was heavily worn due to being fitted fabric side to the rollers and came of reasonably easily. As far as I can tell, new belt is the same length as the old one. I supect the old belt was fitted the way it was because whoever fitted it was struggling like me and just "rolled" it over the pulley somehow to bodge it on.

Similar problem with the a/c belt, I think the top idler adjacent to the AC pump should slacken off, but again it doesn't seem to go far enough. I have no old belt to compare this one to, but no reason to think it's not right.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm in a bit of a rush as I only have tomorrow morning to get this sorted as a favour for a mate.

May sound like stating the obvious but have you looked under the clamping bolts for the respective a/c pump and alternator for an adjuster bolt? Like many of the Japanese engines they have a bolt adjuster underneath the unit which only works once the main unit has been released first. Well worth another look as they're easily missed.

Err, nope! I'll have a look in the morning. Using the alternator as an example, I completely removed the bolt at the sliding slide, where would this adjuster be in relation to that?

Basically, there should be a bracket around the mounting points of the unit, be it a/c pump / alternator etc. It is typically directly above or below the unit and look like a 'C' section bracket with a long bolt running through it. You'd normally 'undo' (anti-clockwise) to tighten and vice versa to loosen. If for example you're doing the alternator, you'd need to loosen (not remove) the 2 retaining bolts and then look for the adjusting bolt to gain more slack / movement in the unit to allow the belt to fit. Then, obviously, reverse procedure to tighten after replacement. Tighten the belt so that it has between 5-10mm movement between either side of the true running line. If it has too much it will slip and squeal, too little and it will stretch and weaken.

Thinking about it in another way, there could be a self loading tensioner that can be retracted with a spanner to release the tension or even possibly a stretch belt. I'd guess that it is the first but have a close look and see if there's a roller that is attached to a spring. Some move anti-clockwise so you'll have to undo the nut in effect to release the tensioner. Some go the other way so you'll have to have a good look at it to decide what type of tensioner you have on yours.

Thanks for the advice. About to have another look, hopefully be able to figure it out. The more I think about it, the more I think the alternator belt is too short though.

I'm not to worried about the a/c belt, that can be left of if need be.

Problem solved, at least for the alternator belt. Needed a longer belt. It seems the look ups that the motorfactors use have an error. Had to get a slightly longer one by trial and error. All good now.

Still need to find some help on how the a/c belt should be installed.

Loosen the nut in the idler pulley and slacken the draw bolt that pulls it up the slot ...
