Afternoon,

Since Buying my '04 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI I have noticed a vibration when the engine is under load, especially in 4th or 5th gear. It can be quite severe if under a lot of load, e.g hard acceleration uphill. I've done some research and am no better off - I've tried the dishcloth between the intercooler pipe and subframe but still no joy. The vibration isn't there when coasting so definitley not binding brakes or wonky wheel. Has anyone had a similar experience? I don't know if it's relevant but when accelerating or decelerating there can be a pronounced 'clunk' from upfront, which makes me think maybe engine mounts?

Any help much appreciated as it is pretty irritating! Cheers, Phil

Lower engine mount perhaps?

purely internet hyperbole spreading but arent there dual mass flywheel issues with this engine (like many others)?

A clunk when coming on/off load would certainly be a symptom of DMF failing. Other possibilities are the aforementioned engine mounts, and suspension bushes. When they fail they can appear fine at slow speed, but under load they can start to fail and cause wheel wobble.

The noise might be from the DMF, but it's also likely to be a symptom of driving it in the wrong gear.
High loads, low engine revs and high gears will often give transmission rumble as you'll be feeling the individual bangs of the cylinders trying to push the car up the hill.

Just keep it simple and go with the engine mounts first. They are the most likely based on the description and they are also the easiest to fix.

There is a known fault with crank pully damper breaking up

Thanks for the replies so far. I will be looking into the engine mounts to see what's going on, and having my fingers crossed that it isn't the DMF as I gather they can be quite pricey.

I see what you're saying, but it happens all the time, even in 2nd at low speeds around town etc.

Quick update on this if anyone cares. Turned out to be a slightly bent driveshaft which had then chewed the CV joint and was rocking the engine around on every rotation. All sorted now and my 45 mile commute will fingers crossed now be trouble free!

We do care
It's important to hear what the issue was so knowledge grows
I wonder how the driveshaft got bent?

I'm not altogether sure, when I bought the car in March it had a slight vib. which got progressivley worse. I'm hoping my driving too fast down the farm track (well, dirt road) to my house everyday didn't make it worse.
