I need some shims for my Silvertop Zetec. The ones fitted are not correct to the spec (Kent Cams).
So after some jiggling & swapping around I needed about 8 more.

I thought I could just order the sizes required. After chasing around I found Burton sell blanks. So I now have blanks that have been machined to correct size.

But I am now unsure what to do with them!

The info/research I have gained is confusing. Some say job is done & just fit them, some say need case or full hardening. The new shims are hard, but not as hard as the originals.

Need help as the race season is starting to fly past.

Thanks.

All the shims I have made are silver steel through hardened, this way they can be ground without reaching soft material, if they too soft they will hammer and your follower clearances will loosen.

What size are they? I keep shims in stoc of a particular diameter, they are through hardened an in various thicknesses from 100 thou to 160 thou.

If you are in doubt have them case hardened.

I got some for pennies from a local Ford dealer. I used them to shim up a Toyota engine to get the sizes correct then ordered the correctly sized but hideously priced Toyota items.t

Do you have any details please? What size, what you asked for at Ford etc...

Cheers Guys.

My problem is the zetec engine was hydraulic but changed to solid. The shims are small & sit on the valve stem. Hence they are not a Ford part.

I believe the Ford items sit on top of the followers & are indeed the size of old pennies.

Thanks for advise so far.

Pretty sure they are the same as the ones I keep in stock, what diameter are they?
