My brother has the above car.

Symptoms

Initially, loss of power when accelerating and hesitation betwenn 1800-2000rpm

Subsequently, no start condition.

Car went in to the dealer who did some guessing and decided to fit a new MAF. This did not cure the problem, but in the dealers custody, the car began to behave.

Not surprisingly the car is misbehaving with the same initial problems, sometimes barely getting above idle and producing a lot of white (unburnt fuel) smoke.

It is back in the dealers again now for them to do some more guessing!

I don't have a code reader nor info, so I am asking if anyone else has had similar issues with the 2.0 DuraTorque (or whatever it's called) oil burner?

I have a MAP sensor theory. If the MAP sensor is not responding correctly, the ECU is not seeing the rise in MAP as it comes on to boost and causing the hesitation. If the signal is also reading high when it should not, the ecu is excessivly fueling?

Any thoughts?

The dealer has come back with the DMF as the cause of the issue. They say excessive movement inn the DMF is causing an irratic engine speed reading.

I'm suspicious!

Laugh
DMF won't make the engine smoke
Well mine didn't when it was fubared
I did however have the power problem you have when the injectors went but not the white smoke

I would look at the EGR.

I suspect it is stuck open.

Poor (or non) starting, and performance issues, are typical.

You can strip and clean it, or get it replaced, but it should show up on a code reader.

Lots of other things can cause similar problems, such as crank or camshaft position sensors.
Inn fact I have a dodgy rpm (crank) sensor at the moment, but it only fails when the engine is hot, and turned off. Then can't start it until it cools down. This did show on the code reader, but on the dash, it flashes the glow plug light (fiat 1.9 jtd of same vintage as your brother's ford)

I had glow plug light flashing and recorded P0251 fault code
I changed
Fuel filter
Cam sensor
Cleaned inlet manifold and EGR
The messiest job I have ever done
Still problem
Had an injector leak down test done
All 4 needed replacing

UPDATE:

Dealer changed the flywheel, and the problem was kind of cured except, on start up with clutch depressed, no problem. Without clutch depressed horrible racket. New starter fitted and this cured the problem. But, for some reason thhey sent the injectors to a local "specialist" to have them cleaned. Apparently the specialist couldnet service them. Now the thing smokes like mad.

Question, Are Ford injectors coded to the engine/cylinder through the ECU?

Coded to ECU
Depending on injector type £80 to £135 each fitted

Don't confuse the engine in this being the same as the troublesome Mondeo TDCI unit... it isn't.

It's the 'DW' engine which is French. *spits*

I had issues with the smaller (also French) 1600 TDCI engine in an '05 Focus this week, diagnostics pointed to MAF sensor, live data showed no increase in MAF flow on accel, and very little boost pressure 1.4bar absolute (should be at least 1.8bar absolute) turned out to be a very simple fix in the end, one of the rubber pipe elbows from the wastegate solenoid to the turbo actuator was swollen with oil contamination and leaking. New piece of pipe = sorted.

I don't think the injectors on the DW engines are coded like the Delphi s h i t e in Mondeo/Transits.

White smoke points to unburnt fuel, really needs leak-off test doing on injectors and compression test carrying out (I've seen some diesel engines that have over-fuelled/hydrauliced bend the con-rods before).

Also,I hate being the bearer of bad news but the injectors get seized in the head on these, I had some very unhappy hours on a Fiat taxi which also uses this French POS 'DW' motor that had injector seals leaking, bright spark manager wanted all the seals changing rather than just the offending cylinder.. nightmare job.

Easy to remove the injectors with the correct kit.

We work on these cars day in day out. Never really get that much issues with them, the 1600 ones well!

Sounds to me like you have a flow regulator fault on the high pressure pump, done a few now, but obviously without physically seeing it its just a hunch.
