Sister in laws car running very rich (you can smell the petrol off it), It's doing around 25mpg when it should be getting nearly double that. It seems like its idling very low to me. But it starts first time everytime, and seems to drive ok.

I have a cheapo obd2 reader, I just plugged it in to see if there was anything obvious wrong before sending it way to the mechanics. There are no error codes and coolant temperature sensor seems to be working, MAF is giving a reading, don't know if its true though. Thing that stands out to me is the second oxygen sensor doesn't move at all (100%, 0.455 volts) no matter what the engine is doing. So would I be right it thinking its got a dodgy second oxygen sensor? (I.e the one before or after the cat).

Get it on a proper fault code reader!

OBD2 only gives you certain information and then it's generally incorrect.

1.2TCE in a Clio?

It should indeed be getting more than 25mpg.

I'd suggest a trip to a dealer or Renault independent would be a good idea.

Nope, twingo gt

Yeah, It was more me being nosy. It's going to the garage on Friday anyway. (And good luck to them, the engine is absolutely shoe horned into it).

That's a very sweeping statement!

Whilst I am certain there will be some that fit what you say, I have to say that I bought one made by Autel a couple of years ago & it has proved invaluable on several occasions, and each fault recorded, erased, recorded again & then fixed, has been sucessful.

It works on every make I have used it on & the live data has also been an invaluable tool.

Although having said this, I do agree that you get what you pay for & some do look VERY tacky & cheap, and I would guess that the more you pay, the more functionality you will have.

Anyway, The mechanic reckons it just needs a good service. I agree with him to be honest (I've known him for years), he showed me the air filter, it wasn't pretty to say the least, we think it might not have been changed since the car was new back in 09. (The car was serviced by renault, but seems like they were just doing oil and oil filter changes, not a full service)

The oxygen sensor after the cat should remain pretty static. It not used for mixture control, it's purpose is to check that the cat is in place and working efficiently.

I wouldn`t expect a 4 year old air filter to cause such a dramatic reduction in economy. Could be wrong though.
