Timing belt change on Focus TDCI
Discussion
Whats involved in doing a cam belt on a 1.6 TDCI 90bhp 01/08 engine. Is it similar to renault engines where you have to lock the cran with a rod and no keyway on the pulley or is more straight forward.
I am capable of changing clutches, engines etc but I understand that it only has to go slightly wrong and the engine will be finished. Whats the job likely to cost at an indy. Mileage is currently 109k so needs doing sooner rather than later.

Thanks, I have found this as well.

Do you think you need the locking kit or will a couple of bent screwdrivers do. I have always lined a clutch plate up with the handle of a socket ratchet.
Just thought, is mine not a DOHC, will have a look in the morning.

Had a quick go at this this morning, got as far as getting the wing liner off. The water pump looks to be right next to the inner wing to get off and looks a sod to do, everything is covered in oil down there and I dont fancy having black hands for the next too weeks (cant work in gloves).
Also I'm not sure which way the crank nut pulley undoes.
I do tend to give up quite easily on things nowadays and I hate working on cars, I sold a combo van a couple of years ago for half price because it needed an alternator and a bolt was a b
h to undo.
So a couple of options.
Nothing and wait for it to snap or get a mechanic to do it but I don't think the job is worth more than £100 to do, cant take more than half a day to do. Or PX it for something else but it will have a DPF.

Crank pulley undoes normal way, the trouble is though you don't want to be turning the engine backwards, it is known for the chain in the head to jump a tooth if well worn. Ideally you need to lock the crank somehow.
Believe me ive done worse cam belts, but if your not up to it i'm sure you can get a local spanner man to do it for £100.

Thanks mikey, you have been more than helpful, I might have another go tomorrow. That was one concern about removing the pulley but I know you can lock it with a pin in the bell housing. Another thing I'm not 100% on is once you remove the bottom pulley and lower cover, what holds the crank timing pulley to the crank shaft, does it have a woodruiff key in it to stop it rotating. On one I saw done on a megane petrol there was no keyway on the pulley and the only thing that stopped the timing going out was the aux pulley bolt tightness.
