Vivaro fuel problem.
Discussion
Hi guys. I wonder if anyone can throw up some ideas on this one for me?
I have a Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 on a 2006 plate with no fuel pressure at the main feed pipe from the pump. I've just changed the Bosch high pressure pump for a recon Bosch one (which relieved me of £400) and still have no fuel pressure at the main inlet on the rail. I've checked the timing which is spot on, new pump and still it won't pump fuel. I bled the fuel system and there is pressure on the hand pump at the filter and no bubbles in the feed pipe going into the pump. There is fuel at the rail where the main feed pipe goes in but nowhere near as much pressure as there should be.
Just throwing this one out here, I did have the same problem a few years back with a Fiat Scudo which has a very similar (looking) pump from memory which was showing similar symptoms and turned out to be a dodgy starter motor that was causing a drain in the electric circuit at cranking even though it was strong enough to turn the engine over. In that case I sent the Fiat to the helpful chaps at Thames Valley Electro Diesels in Reading who said the short in the starter was enough to wipe out the signal for the high pressure pump. They changed the starter and that was that. Is this the same fault and has anyone else had the same problem????
I have checked the voltage at time of cranking and although the battery is holding 12.5v, it drops at cranking and there's a spark from the positive terminal when I crank it over, which of course would happen if either the starter is faulty and or the battery has fused inside itself.
Any help or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated as it's getting on my tits now and I'm no closer to curing it.

Get some diagnostic kit connected up, if no codes read the fuel rail pressure, squeezing the bulb should make the figure change by a couple of psi, this should show the fuel pressure sensor is working. Crank over and you should see about 300 bar (4000 odd Psi)
May be the actual lift pump that sits on the back of the high pressure pump.
Edit, just re read your post, the lift pump would have come on the recon pump anyway so doubt it would be that.

Thanks guys for your answers. The answer in the end was a new battery and a lot of aggro bleeding the fuel pump. I think the guts in the battery were worn out by the garage it was in cranking it over and over trying to get it started with a knackered pump. I donated one from a Vectra and it had enough oomph to spin it over but the pump was an absolute arse to bleed. For some reason the pump just wouldn't take on any fuel even with the injector pipes cracked off and the main rail tight. What I did in the end was take off the main feed pipe from the filter to the pump and used an electric fuel pump to drag the fuel through the filter then replaced the original pipe and hand bled the pipe as best as possible with the original hand pump. It still wouldn't fire up so I gave it a little squirt of brake cleaner and kept squeezing the hand pump for about 30 seconds until it bled itself then tightened the injector pipes and she now runs like a dream.
Never had a problem with a pump like this before and can only assume that the battery was draining the power to the regulator on the pump as it was buzzing nicely with the ignition on then cutting out when cranking over with a jump. From that I'd say that it was the same issue with the Scudo except the battery was the drain and not the starter.
Thanks again for your help though guys.

Hi All.
Reading this with interest.
I have 54 Nissan Primastar which will not start. Mobile mechanic has looked at it and has said lift pump in tank is faulty. Another "specialist" has said it will not have a lift pump in the tank if it has a primer bulb (which it does).
Very confused now as a lift pump has been ordered and I do not want to waste money on wrong parts and call outs.
Does anyone know if this vehicle will have a lift pump or not.
Regards,
Iain

if it has a bulb then it wont have an in tank pump
a likely culprit is the wires going to the rail pressure sensor have went brittle and broken internally, gives a symptom like a pumt that wont prime, not even a dribble to the rail
corrosion in the blue multiplug under the coolant reservoir can also have the same effect.
also if your airbox isnt secured properly it can chafe the injector or cam sensor wiring again causing the pump not to deliver any fuel

Well clearly if you gave your chassis number to the dealer and they were able to order the part.....Nissan thought it had one fitted.Reading this with interest.
