Hello,

I fitted a new cambelt kit to my van, yesterday, something i have done many times before on various vehicles without issue.

However, after fitting it all up and giving myself a pat on the back, i started it and the belt is running off the pulleys (toward the wing of the vehicle) i must admit the old cambelt was a fair bit thinner than the new one which would suggest it was doing the same thing before (lucky i caught it in time i guess)

Anyway, does anyone with knowledge of this underpowered, piece of st engine have any previous experience with these symptoms?i was wondering whether the crank pulley could possibly have been put on the wrong way round before, and cant see anything obvious that would push it off.

After a fruitless search via google on similar problems, i found nothing related at all and thought i'd ask the ph massive before i take it to bits again.

Many thanks in advance

Tom

Make sure the tensioner for the timing belt is slid on the dowel ok, if you get it off slightly it can have a degree on it that makes it slide the belt.

What he said, same with any guide pulleys. Make sure they're seated against the block OK, no rust or anything behind them.

And also check the water pump, since the timing belt also powers this.

Thanks for the replies!

Repaired it this week and it was indeed because the pulley wasn't over the dowel enough, this was due to it being mushroomed by being beaten with a hammer in the past i reckon.
Filed it down and on it went!
