I bought me a high mileage Mondeo TDCi hack to get me to work -
a lot of car for not much cash and it goes well so far... but
under hard acceleration the car fairly surges forward but seems to leave a cloud of smoke as the turbo spins up.
Can anyone give me an idea what could be causing this?(is it more likely to be something worn/failing rather than some tuning issue?) - car seems to run 'normally' other than that ie starts well, runs smooth, no 'death rattles' or noises...
Any advice/ tips welcome.

Turbo hose? OR something else allowing air in after the air meter?

My TDV8 was doing this, garage immediately diagnosed and swapped out both hoses as 1 was split allowign air in and upsetting all the mixtures. Result... black smoke on acceleration.

Could be anything simple like above, to knackered injectors or pump etc which could cost a fortune to fix.

Lots of work and testing are the only real way to find out

Could be a build up of diesel dust in the exhaust, has it been on a proper run/italian tune up

possible that the injectors are leaking a bit

Make sure you have no intake leaks i.e induction split hoses, leaking inter-cooler etc this will cause over-fueling and black smoke due to lack of boost pressure reaching the engine frown

EGR Valve getting blocked, hasn't been driven properly. Make a point of taking it past 3,5K RPM at least once a week

You did not say if the smoke was black or blue if black Put some 2 stroke oil in with the diesel for a couple of tanks and see if it clears. You need 200:1 mix mineral oil low ash 2 stroke. I use Coma. My exhaust gas is now clean under hard exceleration.
