I have a Quaife 6-speed sequential dog box, model QKE10R in my elise race car. It was taken apart for inspection and basically every gear is damaged. Gearbox has about 20 hours on it from new. PITA.

I am looking into why there is so much damage and how to prevent it happening again.

Quaife can supply most of the parts I need, except for the 4th gear, which has a 12 week lead time to produce for me. Problem is, first race of the season is in 6 weeks. Does anyone have experience replacing Quaife gear sets in their sequential boxes? Do I have other options as to what to replace them with, other than Quaife again?

To be specific, I need:

OUTPUT SHAFT 3.923
DRIVE DISC 1ST/2ND
INNER TRACK 3RD GEAR
DRIVE DISC 3RD/4TH
4TH GEAR O/S 1.412
INPUT SHAFT
3RD GEAR I/S
4TH GEAR I/S
5TH I/S
DRIVE DISC 3RD/4TH & 5TH/6TH
2ND GEAR O/S
3RD GEAR O/S

As you can guess; the above is pretty expensive.

Any ideas?

Shafts and gears damaged ?

Surely that's either faulty components or no oil ?

You could hardly attribute that much damage to the user in any way ?

What engine is it bolted to ?

For a second/opinion and maybe some options try Dave

If I remember correctly you had problems last year with this gearbox jumping out of gear and not selecting correctly, looking at the list of parts you require this would seem to be the result of damaged dogs on the gears (to be changed in pairs) and the dog rings. With this type of of gearbox you need to be fully engaged in gear as quickly as possible when changing gear to avoid damage to the dogs as the gearbox was having problems with this earlier it will certainly have caused the damage.

Now is historically the worst time of year for getting race car gearbox parts quickly as it's always really busy for the manufacturers as everybody is rebuilding their gearboxes for the start of the season, believe me this is not just a Quaife specific problem!
