After driving conservatively over recent weeks, I decided to do ye old italian tune up, up to third gear, up to 4.5k revs and held for a few seconds then carefully into 5th.

Immediately felt misfiring and juddering when I eased off; no lights at all on the dash, still driveable, but definite loss of power; sometimes doesn't miss and is smooth for a few seconds, then returns.

There *seems* to be more vibration at standstill but don't know if this is my imagination. There is also a stuttering, high pressure noise - I'm thinking some kind of split pipe, exhaust manifold or head gasket.

Would love to hear what you think - where should I start looking? Is a cheap diagnostic off ebay worth it? Would really appreciate help!

Edited to add, seems to be a bit more of a diesel/exhaust smell in the cabin.

When was the fuel filter last changed?

Does it only have problems once off the throttle? Turbo wastegate?

Problems whilst on full throttle? Boost leak?

I bought a vgate scanner off eBay for about 25quid and it's fantastic.

Maybe see if somebody local can scan it for you?

Forgot about that!

OP the 1.9TDI PD 150 has a higher than average camshaft failure/wear rate, so may be another option.

Pass
No, on throttle
Haven't given it full welly
Want to get a scanner rather than get someone to scan for me - thanks for the recommendation, looking at one now.

PS, it's a lowly 110 rather than 130/150 - does it still suffer same failure?

Not sure on if the 110 variant had the issue, I only know the 150 did.

The scanner I have that lives in the boot is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-VS450-VAG-Group-Scan...

It will read error codes from all different modules, so ECU, airbags, ABS, Central Convenience etc

It will also reset service indicators and even reset longlife service intervals.

Edit: here is the latest version of that scanner http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0063FSIQ4/ref=...

Thanks for the links Smithy, just ordered the VS450 - so my next question is, have you got a link to a reliable site with the codes/definitions please?

Should cover just about every code you can imagine! Along with symptoms, possible causes and where to start with possible solutions.
