My ford focus has started hesitating at 30mph and 37mph only in fourth gear. Can anyone help? Wanted some advice before throwing money at the car.

Some more details on the car would be helpful, age..mileage....service history.....engine size.....fuel type, is it definitely only in 1 particular gear under load or reproducible in a couple of gears under varying engine load? Etc smile

It's a ford focus 2001, petrol, 1.6 with 130000 miles on the clock. People are thinking it's the fuel pump. It seems to be doing it in all gears but only at around 1200 rpm. Motorway driving it doesn't do it at all. It cut out twice yesterday when casually changing gear

Did it cut out coming up to junctions or traffic lights ? If so the Vehicle speed sensor was a common cause of this behaviour, the RPM should hang momentarily around 1k rpm when coming to a stop before dropping to base idle.
has it ever had it's fuel filter replaced?

Well worth getting it on a code reader and scanning for DTC's before sticking a pump unit on it.

I had the aa come out and run a scan and nothing come up. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor about 3 months ago. The fuel filter hasn't been changed but doesn't this usually throw out non starting issues when they're blocked?

Quick update. I have replaced my fuel pump and it hesitate briefly whilst setting off . It hasn't hesitated since but I have only drove it for about an hour after replacement, fingers crossed. Also are fuel filters common to go on petrol cars? Is it worth me replacing this aswell?

Its a filter and a routine service item, so yes it's a disposable item thats worth renewing if you've no idea when it was last done or if you regularly run the tank low.

Lets hope the stronger (new) pump is the winner biggrin

Fingers crossed. Thanks for your help.

I've learnt something either way :-)

It is physically impossible for a faulty fuel pump to only affect a specific speed in a particular gear. That much at least ought to be common sense.

May be common sense to most people but I only know so much but on the plus side im learning all the time with my car. If i do certain speeds and hold that speed, that is when the judder was happening. Cutting out was at random times. It's all a mystery as ive made every effort to get to the speeds that the fault was present and no judder is there after changing to a new fuel pump.
Who knows. Will see how we go in the next few days, it could come back.

To be fair, in the op's second post he did say it's more prevalent than the opening post suggested.

Well so far soo good. My car has been fine. If the fault doesnt come back, i'll be a very happy man. Cars are complicated but uncomplicated if that makes sense. When you start eliminating things you feel like you're getting somewhere. Hopefully ive stopped scratching my head.
