hi all,
getting my car ready for the road this year after carrying out a 5 spd conversion in my triumph 6 cylinder.have had the engine running but there is a screeching noise when I apply the clutch pedal.
now I also put in a bronze crank thrust washer while the engine was out and it has a brand new clutch release bearing fitted.it has a new hefty paddle clutch (I do go up the strip now and then and the old ap clutch just wasn't man enough anymore).

could it be the fact the thrust washer needs to bed in or is the clutch pressure too high and is squeezing out any oil between it and the crank.

with the engine running the pedal now feels slightly rough when pressed.

thanks.

By Triump 6 cylinder, I'm assuming you're talking Vitesse / GT6 / TR5 TR6? If not, ignore everything below! BTW, it's been a long time since I last worked on one of these, so this is from memory.

Question: do you mean the thrust bearings that sit around the rear main bearing on the crank, or the bronze insert that sits in the end of the crank, and carriers the input shaft for the gearbox?

If you've replaced the thrust bearings: it is possible to put them in backwards on this engine, which leads to some fairly spectacular end float in the crank as the bearings wear away a disintegrate fast in this case. Suggest you borrow a friend and sit them in the car. Ask them to operate the clutch a few times. While they're doing this, watch the pulley on the front of the crank. If it's moving visibly, then your thrust bearings are dead. You'll need to drop the sump off and check for damage, as the crank may have hit part of the block, although it's unlikely to have gone that far. You'd then need to measure the end float in the crank, and determine a suitable size replacement thrust bearing

However, if you're talking about the bronze insert, I found the best thing for this is a liberal dose of copper grease during assembly - assembled dry it will be very noisy. It has no other source of lubrication than whatever you use during assembly.
