Had a strange one recently, under a bit of hard acceleration from cold or in sport mode (2006 z4 3.0) I would get an engine light up and misfire. Stopping and starting would clear the fault and would be ok.

The issue I have is the scan tool readings. If the fault happened on my way home, I'd plug the scanner at work the next day and there would be no current or pending faults. I managed to get the fault on the way into work the other day and read the faults straight away, pending showed misfire on cyl 6. I swapped coil from 6 to 2 and let the car cool for the day, took the scanner home with me and triggered the fault on the way home. Restart car and drive ten minutes home. When I plug in the scanner I have no faults again, pending or otherwise.

Does anyone know what might cause this? I would usually expect faults to be stored in there and they have been on previous BMW's we've had. The Mastertech is quality scan tool from work (engine testing), so I'm confused as to what's hiding the faults.
